After a tremendous gap year, it's time to get in touch with my feminine side on a brave new start-up - my third such venture in the world of newspapers. You know, the non-digital, tactile version...Brave but criminally short-lived.

Oversaw the production and subbing of a 32-page section featuring original Irish-related sports features, reports and columns, together with lifted and revised content from the main London edition. Liaised with writers and photographers. Got shouted at a lot by the West Ham fan in the big office (how are things, Alex?!).

Wrote the theme song, sang the theme song, covered two World Cup finals (Italia 90 & US 94), went to around 90% of Republic of Ireland matches over an eight-year period, covered London Irish rugby & athletics fixtures, blagged a photography pass at Highbury for five seasons running, followed the Irish sporting stories at Cheltenham, Silverstone, Wembley, The Crucible, the Five Nations (as was) and all manner of boxing venues. Oh, and a shedload of Gaelic Games from Ruislip to Croke Park into the bargain. Did I mention honourable dispatches from Reading Festival and the Fleadh...? Heady days.

Worked seven days a week for six months straight at the start of a long-defunct paper behind Northfields Tube station. Learned about the sheer glamour of working in the media (the day the fresh brew coffee machine arrived) and the heartache meted out to the common hack (the day they came to take it away a fortnight later). Covered every Irish sporting story, from the local boxing club to Euro 88. Wrote the reports, designed the pages, laid them out, subbed the copy, wrote the headlines, went to the typesetters to check all was well, drove up to Bicester to the printers every Tuesday, came back after midnight to drop bundles of papers off to the distributor waiting at the Hanger Lane gyratory. You may have gathered by now that we were not overflowing with staff. Twenty-five years on, plus ca change...
