After switching middleware from Liberate to the OpenTV platform, mostly worked in C with the OpenTV SDK as technical lead developing video on demand (VOD), radio, minibill and SNMP notification applications.Worked on a project to create an eTV quiz application and content management system (CMS) for the BBC. This consisted of a tomcat back end generating and deploying quizzes on Liberate, MHEG and OpenTV platforms in the UK. Mostly worked on the OpenTV and Liberate clients, often on site at the BBC, as well as helping to coordinate the efforts of the Chello team which was split over the Amsterdam and London offices.Responsible for troubleshooting and reworking code where performance issues have been prevalent on what are often limited (in memory and processor power) hardware platforms.

Part of a team developing applications for digital set top boxes for the UPC european affiliates. Writing user interfaces in JavaScript on the Liberate 1.2 DTV platform for setting reminders and buying near video on demand (NVOD) movies among other things.Worked on back end server applications using Java servlets, Tomcat and ISAPI. Including a tracking application to provide usage metrics for the set top boxes and a screen prototyping application to test visual designs against the multi language requirements during the early stages of development when text could not be displayed in place in a real application.Responsible for developing and maintaining the automated build and release process.

Part of a team developing an electronic programme guide (EPG) in JavaScript on the Liberate 1.2 DTV platform. Took the role of technical lead on the last development phase of the project. Aquired knowledge of the technical aspects of Digital TV (attended seminars on MPEG 2 and DVB. Involved in the systems integration team aimed at easing the rollout of the new Liberate platform across the cable network). Responsible for coordinating the delivery of the various components that make up the set top box environment and ensuring that builds are produced in a timely fashion. Migrated the development environment to a new source code control system. Produced documentation and coding standards for the development team.

Working on site, writing process editing software in Java for a process management system. Using a Java XML DOM parser to read and update a proprietary XML document format containing the process definition. Working with JavaCC to create a rule definition language and parser. Using UML for component design and documentation. Scripting in PERL on the HPUX platform also parsing XML. Creating documentation and mentoring new starters.

Doing contract work for various clients in C++ (access control systems), ASP and WAP (a WAP demo application for Nortel Networks) and then a long period with Hewlett Packard working in Java
