I'm an oilfield geologist with almost a decade of experience, mostly field based. I've been very fortunate to have worked in a wide variety of settings with some of the sharpest geologic minds I've ever come across. I was brought up with a solid mudlogging background (an art form that is unfortuantely dying off in the modern patch) which was something I never considered while in school. After graduating I quickly realized the only good job opportunities were entry level mudlogging positions so I packed my bags and headed west towards the best opportunites. It turned out to be a true blessing, and I quickly fell in love with exploring the majestic geology of the west, both above and below the surface. Since late 2011 I have been focused on geosteering horizontal wells in the emerging shale plays of the Marcellus and Eagle Ford both remotely but mostly in the field. I have enjoyed the work immensely, geosteering being more focused on Structural geology which was my favorite subject in college. It is truly amazing what we can do with modern directional tools and geosteering software (I've used many different kinds) and I take a great deal of pride in helping companies increase their percentages in horizontal targets and minimize time intensive directional work, both of which can have a significant impact on an operator's bottom line. I would say the greatest challenge in this work is communication. I often act as the bridge between the blue collar onsite personnel with the white collar personnel based offsite at the operator's office. In this field it's extremely important to be able to break down complex geologic concepts and data to a level one with no background in the science can easily understand, which I consider a particular talent of mine. I have met many great people throughout the US on rigs and in operator offices and I love how LinkedIn lets us all keep in some kind of contact.
