About Peter Horgan
I am a GIS professional based in Boulder, Colorado. Upon finishing my Bachelor's Degree from Colorado State University in 2012, I relocated to the Gunnison Valley to live a lifestyle in the mountains of southwest Colorado. Being fully immersed in the mountains allowed me to continue to pursue my passions of rock climbing and snowboarding. Since then, I have worked in the ski industry, hospitality, outdoor education and now land conservation. After several years guiding clients on rock climbing and hiking trips, it led to a greater purpose to advocate and steward the places that I was taking these clients into and where I personally recreated. To kick start this transition from outdoor educator to land manager, I began and completed a Master's Degree in Environment Management from Western Colorado University, founded a non-profit organization representing the climbing community in the Gunnison Valley and starting a podcast focused on rock climbing advocacy. Skills: My skills in customer service and client relations have grown from my time in hospitality and outdoor education. My time spent working in land conservation has allowed skills in GIS, grant writing, conflict resolution, partnership growth and sustainable land management to grow exponentially. More specifically, as a GIS Specialist and graduate of the University of Denver's Graduate GIS Program I am skilled at spatial data creation and analysis, cartography, web mapping, Story Maps, vector and raster analysis, spatial querying, Python fundamentals, remote sensing and open-source GIS workflows. I am proficient in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and QGIS.

Podcast Host
I am contracted to host and produce the "Climbing Advocate Podcast" for the Access Fund. Access Fund is an environmental organization and accredited land trust that protects and stewards our nation's climbing areas. I created the podcast in 2018 to showcase climbing advocates from around the country that are doing critical work to keep climbing areas open and stewarded. I have hosted a variety of guests and have discussed a variety of topics including stewardship, law and policy, education and DEI issues in the outdoor industry. I am responsible for creating an agenda for each episode, interviewing the guest(s) and editing the content for its release.
Vice President & Co-Chair
I serve on the Board of Directors for GIS Colorado. GIS Colorado is a non-profit organization that provides geospatial professionals with a collaborative environment for the support and exchange of GIS information, resources, and technology. I am responsible for planning the organization's quarterly meetings and trainings.
Executive Director
I served as the Executive Director of a non-profit organization, Gunnison Valley Climbers (GVC). The mission of Gunnison Valley Climbers is to protect and steward the climbing resource in the Gunnison Valley of Colorado. Since its inception, GVC has collaborated with local federal land managers on stewardship projects to improve the local climber experience, replaced and updated aging hardware for safety precautions and fundraised for operations and to support other climbing-focused non-profits.
Stewardship Manager
I worked in the stewardship department at the Crested Butte Land Trust, an accredited land trust through the Land Trust Alliance. I was responsible for stewarding all of our properties that we either own or hold a conservation easement on. This included monitoring each property on an annual basis using monitoring technologies including Landscape Conservation Software and Lens, a remote monitoring software that uses high resolution satellite imagery. Utilizing GIS also supports conservation projects and grant writing. Other primary stewardship tasks included maintaining infrastructure on the properties, creating educational signage, noxious weed mitigation and coordinating with landowners on special projects. I also coordinated collaborative conservation groups that involve 15+ stakeholders to protect local natural resources.
Student Fellow
I helped write the mission and values of this newly created entity while I was a Master's student at Western Colorado University. I wrote a successful grant for program funding from National Geographic for $21,000.
Teaching Assistant
I planned and facilitated weekly discussions and topics for the students in a graduate-level course on public lands management. I curated a 5-day field experience for the students to the Bears Ears region of Southeastern Utah where they learned about current issues and future management approaches for the region.
Student Fellow
I held this fellowship while I was a Master's student at Western Colorado University. I assisted with creating a communication strategy for this proposed legislation for land protections in the Gunnison Basin in Southwestern Colorado. I got my first exposure to ArcGIS Online during this time while completing a project assessing wilderness characteristics and Special Management Areas as it pertained to existing water structures.
Climbing Guide
I guided clients in the outdoors primarily rock climbing and hiking in the greater Crested Butte area.
Lodge Staff Manager
This was a position working with high-end clientele, ensuring delivery of a professional and high quality product in adventure hospitality. I was responsible for training and delegating duties to new and current members of the lodge staff team.
