ICRAR is one of the world’s leading radio astronomy research institutes and a vital part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project—a global collaboration of 16 countries to build the world’s largest radio telescope in Western Australia and South Africa. In this role, I managed a team of high-performing individuals working across strategic communications, media engagement, marketing, strategic partnerships, school programs and community outreach.During my time with ICRAR, the Centre went from a handful of researchers to being recognised as one of the top five radio astronomy research institutes in the world. My team delivered outreach and education programs for more than 250,000 members of the public, school students and teachers. In the media and comms domain, our releases and online presence led to more than 25,000 articles and a global audience in the millions.

As manager of the largest planetarium in Australia and New Zealand, I oversaw all operations of this multimillion-dollar venue.During my time in this role, I coordinated a state-wide initiative called Astronomy WA. I worked with this network of astronomy outreach providers to deliver a collaborative series of events throughout Western Australia to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. One of them, the Perth Astrofest, became the country’s largest annual public astronomy event.

As a project officer for WA’s science discovery centre, I designed, developed and coordinated a program to support teachers across Western Australia.Involving themed boxes of science equipment and curriculum-aligned resources, these kits are available for hire by schools throughout the state at little or no cost. This program still exists today and has helped educators deliver STEM-themed activities for thousands of students over the past 20 years.
