Peter Buck is a senior environmental professional with many years of experience leading, planning, designing, and implementing natural resources programs and projects across a variety of landscape types, scales and jurisdictions. Currently Mr. Buck operates a consulting firm, Buck & Associates Consultants LLC, building teams and assisting public agencies successfully design and deliver legacy multi benefit projects across California floodplains. Previous to this work, he was a senior consultant with GEI Consultants Inc., and served as the Director of Natural Resources for the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA) where he was responsible for the environmental and regulatory compliance mission of the Agency for nearly 18 years. Regarded as a subject matter expert and strategic advisor in environmental/natural resources policy, flood system management, conservation planning, ecosystem restoration and related science programs, Mr. Buck has helped secure funding and led the successful implementation of habitat enhancements and resource protections into the execution of complex, large scale multi-benefit flood system improvement programs. In addition to a broad portfolio of projects, he has extensive working knowledge and success navigating through the myriad of state and federal environmental statutes, regulations and policies that govern natural resources in California watersheds and floodplains. While at SAFCA, he developed and championed strong, cooperative relationships with federal and state regulators that are central to timely project execution, and was responsible for managing numerous projects including planning, designing, executing and monitoring of created wetlands, fish passage improvement, riverbank/erosion protection, woodlands, native perennial grasslands/pollinator habitat, agricultural and restored riverine/floodplain habitat projects. Prior to California, Mr. Buck operated a private consulting practice specializing in watershed restoration, ecosystem-based forest management, First Nations natural resources policy and planning on Haida Gwaii/the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada.
