My research has covered a range of steel alloys fro low grade alloys to advanced austenitic steels and coatings. To expose the samples to the desired fireside conditions I have designed, built and operated a novel test rig. I analysed the samples using a range of microscopy techniques which have included optical microscopy, SEM and TEM with EDS and EBSD.This EngD course required excellent problem solving skills for the coursework components and to overcome problems with experimental work. Much of my work has involved the use of excel and other bespoke scientific software.As part of this course I have done outreach work with schools and with the general public. These events coupled with presentations to the management of my sponsoring companies (E.On and The National Physical Laboratory) and to large audiences at research events have greatly improved my communication skills.Although the EngD is engineering based, I was able to take Masters level modules in Business, Marketing and Economics which I have enjoyed immensely. I also competed in a team that won the midlands regional heat of a business competition called Engineering YES (young entrepreneur scheme) for which I was in charge of the projects marketing aspects.
