In this Masterplan a challenging goal is set with respect to energy savings within the installations. All within the same boundaries with regards to maximum reliability and availabity in which we normally work, not only after the energy savings project, but also during the project. Production stand still is absolutely no option. To reach these goals brainstorm sessions, monthly energy reports, analyses, meetings with the stakeholders, project scheduling, energy savings calculation, feasability studies, setting up business cases etc are required. Succes is in the preparation!

Change is inevitable when staying competitive, to stay in the lead change has the highest priority. Supporting these changes effectively requires a platform to document and control this process. Request for change have a variety goals, of which health and safety (of course) have the highest priority. In asset management these goals can generally be related to cost, performance and risk. Weekly meetings with the Change Advisory Board (CAB) ensure continuity of processing the requests for change. Together with the process specialists the CAB decides if a request is useful, achievable and serves the right goals. The right information is gathered and documented on the platform, making it available for execution in the specific successive process, e.g. into the projects process, small scale work process or changes in the maintenance program.Monitoring the changes which are in progress is the next step in managing the process. Feedback of the status of these “changes in progress” to the CAB is of major importance to guarantee the improvements. As manager of this process I have the responsibility for the continuity of the process. This consists of: leading the weekly meetings with the CAB, managing the databases, report from this database, activate and support the RfC holders, etc.

Setting up ISO-14644-16: Code of practice for improving energy efficiency in cleanrooms:In many industries, such as life-sciences (including pharmaceutical, medical device and hospital), micro-electronics, aerospace and nuclear, cleanrooms and associated controlled environments are used. Although varying greatly in function and size, the energy consumption of cleanrooms can be over 10 times higher than that for offices of similar size. A considerable amount of energy is required to provide large amounts of filtered and conditioned air to achieve specific levels of air cleanliness. Air movement fans can account for 35% to 50% of this, due to the power required to overcome the high pressure differentials needed to operate high efficiency filters and other circulation components in the cleanroom system. Additional energy is also used to achieve temperature and relative humidity control for both the process in the cleanroom and for personnel comfort and the requisite pressurisation of the cleanroom space.The cleanroom development has involved rapid expansion and progress for several decades, mirrored by an increasing energy demand. The 14644-16 standard embraces the accumulated experiences and practices in cleanroom design, operation, and maintenance, formulated to reduce their energy consumption and the global impact of this dramatic growth. There is therefore significant potential for energy saving by diligent design in the installation of new cleanrooms, and by retrofit improvements and upgrades to existing facilities.Technical Committee 209 work group 13, led by Richard (Dick) Gibson, consist of a group of expert members from throughout the world. For instance from Great Britain, Ireland, France, USA, Italy, China, Australia and The Netherlands. As member of this technical committee I am contributing with my experience in cleanroom technology, spreading from theory to the day-to-day practices and challenges.

This means, amongst others, optimizing maintenance schedules, status and energy reporting, proposals to improve the systems, etc. This all with the aim to optimize and guarantee reliability, so that the continuity of the production of the customer is guaranteed. This is what we call Asset Management: the best use of technology, looking at the performance, risks and costs, where you strive for optimum reliability, availability, maintainability and safety. What is the maximum capacity that the system can deliver? When are replacement investment planned? What is the impact of changes on other systems? The focus is primarily on existing installations, however, for new projects the experience from the Asset Engineers is used to develop even better systems.

Christiaens Group provides equipment for the mushroom and waste industry. As Sales Engineer I am responsible for the design, engineering, pricing and writing of quotations for aerobic and anaerobic organic waste treatment plants. This involves i.a. the assessment of the waste, determining the balances for energy, mass and water for the system, dimensioning the equipment. This all in close contact with the client.
