Peter is located in Perth and is a member of the Pawsey Petascale System site team. During this early stage of the Pawsey Petascale System project Peter will be working on the systems integration component of the project.

UNIX Systems Consultant within a Managed Services Operation supporting both local and national clients. Technical responsibilities include delivering SLA’s, projects, patching, LDOM’S, NetBackup, reporting and associated technologies in a UNIX/LINUX environment. This managed services operation included a complete build of 20 RedHat Enterprise Linux servers in a VMware 4 system cluster and 8 backend Oracle database’s running on Solaris LDOM’s (Oracle’s VM) with EMC storage. The front-end consists of Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 5.8 on VMware virtual servers running Apache and Adobe Cold Fusion application server. The middle tier supports IDOL search engines, again running on RHEL VMware virtual servers. The back end is Oracle RAC running on Solaris virtual servers Logical Domains (LDOM’s).There is a DEV environment, a TEST environment, a STANDBY environment, a PROD environment and a DR environment. The PROD environment was built with high availability in mind with a checkpoint firewall cluster, dual cisco switches, dual web servers, dual IDOL search engine servers and dual Solaris SPARC servers running oracle RAC. Responsible for all the RHEL builds, disaster recovery testing, standby testing, bare metal recovery testing and implementing the backup software and policies using Netbackup. Another core component is the BAU work including patching, patching policies, change control, monitoring, reporting, capacity planning, weekly reports, storage management and overall health of the system. Other project work consisted physical to virtual conversions of legacy Linux servers to a new VMware ESXi virtual infrastructure and was the IT Change Control Manager.

Engaged by Sun Microsystems as a Proactive Service Engineer to deliver proactive services under the Sun Microsystems Advanced Services Operations. This position was based around Sun’s top five accounts in Western Australia. This Advanced Service is made up of Patching, Patching Policy, Risk Analysis, Data Centre Management, Best Practices, Systems monitoring and Upgrades. Part of this proactive service included Service Delivery Platform (SDP) and Automatic Service Request (ASR) which is an automatic call logging procedure with the relevant vendor and was referenced in the Weekly/Monthly account meetings. Was also involved with the High End tape storage products as a Systems Service Engineer to help maintain, configure, install and repair the Sun Storagetek SL8500/SL3000 tape library systems.

Employed as a Technical Consultant with ASG Group. Primary responsibilities were to support, install, maintain, implement, design and resolve issues around the SUN, SPARC, SOLARIS, AIX and LINUX technologies. This included outsourcing projects, proof of concept, pilots, and customer capacity planning. Also involved with the successful Proof of Concept and the Transition Project at DHW (Department of Housing and Works). This project involved re-hosting of Main Frame applications (Object Star) onto a production and development Sun Solaris system with EMC storage. Had the task of resolving all technical project issues including DR, backups, application installs, resource sharing, user management, BMC Control-M, BMC Control-D, EMC Storage and ensuring that the Proof of Concept and Transition was successful.Another significant assignment was at AlintaGas concentrating on a new backup architecture. This architecture revolves around Window Servers, multi-path EMC CX600 using EMC Power Path, Snap and Legato Backup. Other assignments requiring technical services included Department of Industry and Resource (Managed Services), Chevron (Administration), United Energy (RFP), Saint John of God (Dynamic Reconfiguration) and City of Joondalup (Managed Services).

Was engaged as the lead Systems Engineer for Sun Workgroup Servers, Sun Workstations, Sun Linux, Sun Cobalt, Sun Cluster, Thin Clients and JAVA Technologies in the Southern African region. Responsible for supporting Sun teams, customers and/or partners by providing technical expertise in one or more of these technologies or industry/business solutions. He also contributed significantly to sales opportunities with research, consultancy and guidance on specific technologies or environments, including architectures, on site demonstrations, pilot projects, benchmarking, partner/reseller training and technical presentations. As a secondary role was the backup Systems Engineer for Sun's High-End Data Systems and SunONE integration products and was also appointed as the Account Systems Engineer on Pick & Pay (Retail), Vodacom (Cell Phone provider) and Naspers (Multi Media organization including ISP Mweb) accounts.

Technically responsible for sales targets and management of maintenance, consulting, pre-sales and training. Maintenance consisted of hardware and Solaris operating systems repair and support within a two to four hour response. Due to customer demand CadCam started a Sun authorised Solaris training school and Peter became a certified lecturer in the following courses.  Introduction To System Administration (Solaris); System Administration I (Solaris); System Administration II (Solaris); Networking Administration I (Solaris) and Networking Administration II (Solaris).His pre-sales role consisted of product knowledge, customer visits with the account manager, implementation of strategies, technical presentations, demos and proof of concept in the relevant targeted markets. Consulting was also part of this portfolio consisting of chargeable general Solaris support, backup strategies, Microsoft integration, Application Installation, System builds, Solstice Firewall-1 security policies and Firewall-1 installations.

I was appointed as field service engineer responsible for 60 sites in the North West, South West and West London areas. Responsibilities were the repair, maintenance and installation of DEC and DEC compatible systems in the Essex area. He was the primary engineer on 42 customer sites, supporting the following equipment. PDP 11/23, 11/44, 11/73, 11/84 MicroVAX II MicroVAX 3200/3800, CDC, Fujitsu, Seagate and Maxtor disk drives. Variety of tape drives from QIC-24 to 8mm Exabyte using Dialog, Emulex, DEC Webster and Plessey controllers. Installation/maintenance of RS232 communication with dumb terminals and replacement/repair of network interfaces.
