Coming to the United States from Bombay, India in 1976, I started college early and have worked hard to learn and advance my medical understanding and capabilities. Having studied under world renowned heart surgeons like Dr. Michael DeBakey, Dr. Denton Cooley, and Dr. Howard Frazier during pre-med, medical school and residency, I became fascinated with the heart. I realized that heart disease not only impacts the patient but the options for viable medical care to extend a patient’s life were limited. In my practice, I have seen the impact of heart disease on patients own physical and emotional well-being and as well as the toll that it takes on their families and loved ones.Today, the availability of viable donor heart organs for adults has significantly diminished although the need is rising exponentially. People are living longer, coupled with the complexity of finding an exact donor match has created a significant need for a fully functional, biocompatible, redundant mechanical heart replacement options for adults. We have created the Freedom Heart, the world’s first redundant 4 impeller total heart replacement to prolong the life of a patient who is in cardiac failure. We are continuing to develop, integrate feedback and test the Freedom Heart to help doctors to not only save lives but to extend the quality and well-being of those patients with heart disease.
