Peter Eckel, Ph.D., serves as Senior Fellow and Director of Leadership Programs at the Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy (AHEAD) in the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. His expertise focuses on managing and governing colleges and universities. He teaches in the Executive Doctorate Program in higher education management, the traditional higher education graduate program, and in the Educational Entrepreneurship Program. He currently is leading the creation of an Executive Master’s in Global University Management, a new online degree. He also provides consultation to and develops executive leadership programs for trustees, presidents, provosts, senior student affairs executives, and other campus leaders, both domestically and internationally.

Peter Eckel, Ph.D., served as the Vice President for Programs and Research at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB). In that role, he provided the overall programmatic strategic for the association including its professional development offerings for trustees, presidents and foundation executives and boards. Among his responsibilities were the National Conference on Trusteeship, the Institute for Board Chairs and Presidents and the Presidents Workshop on Trusteeship. He oversaw AGB's research agenda. He lead a national project on the board’s oversight of educational quality and was the lead author of a new national survey of presidents on governance. Eckel has written and spoken extensively on academic leadership, institutional change and campus governance. He has written/edited six books, including Changing Course: Making the Hard Decisions to Eliminate Academic Programs and Privatizing the Public University: Perspectives from Across the Academy. Prior to joining AGB, he served as the director, Center for Effective Leadership at the American Council on Education (ACE).

Peter Eckel, Ph.D. served as Director, Center for Effective Leadership at the American Council on Education (ACE). In addition to providing the leadership for the Center and its domestic and international agendas, he directly ran a series of efforts focused on advancing the leadership of American colleges and universities. He is the founding director of the yearlong ACE Institute for New Chief Academic Officers and a program on the presidential search and transition process, Advancing to the Presidency. He also was involved in a set of efforts that explore the leadership challenges of the strategies colleges and universities are pursuing to respond to a dynamic environment, including leading the ACE Presidential Roundtable Series. He led the 2009 national ACE study of chief academic officers (provosts) and will contribute to ACE’s forthcoming national study of college and university presidents.
