Working as a co-opted Governor for a highly-dedicated and experienced team of special needs teachers at a specialist primary school in Bradford.

I have tutored privately since September 2015, but established this business partly out of the frustrations arising from working through tutoring agencies. Leeds History Tutors allows me to make direct contact with clients and present a full portfolio of tuition areas through my own website. The business provides individual History tuition at GCSE, A and undergraduate levels. Oxbridge entrance preparation, EPQ support, proofreading, English Language and Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) are also available.

Roundhouse History Tours was a business offering specialist historical tours of the North of England, North Wales, France, Belgium, Germany and Poland. It was based on my then 25 years' experience of teaching and lecturing at Advanced and undergraduate levels and 11 years of experience leading and organising historical tours in Britain and Europe for groups of between 5 and 60 clients. Tours operated on a bespoke basis, traveling in cars, minibuses, coaches and even by bicycle. The business needed to operate freely in continental Europe, and so I made the decision to close down in the face of uncertainty over Brexit compounding the considerable financial risks of operating as a sole trader.

I worked as a teacher of A Level History, focusing on Modern British and European History. I delivered enrichments on Medieval and Early Modern History and organised and lead a number of historical trips in the North of England as well as Western and Central Europe. I also trained and lead a group of students for a number of years on a mixed terrain half-marathon and for six years took a group of students on the c2c bike route from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Sunderland on the Wear.

Having begun part-time teaching here in 1994, I took up a full-time post in 1999. I taught History, Basic Literacy and General Studies to a challenging client group in an equally challenging environment. I also delivered the Alcohol Education Programme and took part in Sentence Plan Review Boards.

I taught second and third year undergraduate students on traditional linear and later modular courses in the School of History. I worked on a part-time basis whilst carrying out my PhD research and for a year after completion of my doctorate. I was also involved in lecturing and examining as well as copy editing work at the university during these years.

I taught History to students between the ages of eleven and eighteen, focusing on GCSE and A Level study. I also trained and organised the Cross Country Running Team across the age groups, taking them to success at the Northern Schools championships. I was also a Sixth Form tutor.
