Laboratory OperatorUk Biocentre Sep 2020 - Jul 2021Milton Keynes, England, United KingdomI deferred between my second and final year of university and worked at UK Biocentre, a lighthouse laboratory for testing COVID-19 swabs. I was in engaged in multiple roles and used a multitude of scientific equipment to extract RNA from a sample and amplify the amount to a detectable quantity using PCR. The shifts were 12 hour long and alternated between day and night shifts every 4 weeks, I even worked Christmas day. I was hardworking and committed to the professional processing of samples, always keeping in mind that my actions directly impacted on someone’s life. The foremost problem was backlog and bottlenecking due to the high volume of samples. I demonstrated great versatility, moving between sections and communicated with supervisors to resolve problems. I exemplified high proficiency and was entrusted to teach SOPs and workplace skills to many new employees, demonstrating excellent teamwork and communication skills, taking on many roles and responsibilities within the laboratory. -
