I operate a Honeywell DCS control system within the centralized control room.On my specific panel are: Reformer, Unifiner, Hydrogen Desulphurization, Kerosene Hydro Treater, Amine and Sulphur recovery units along with the various associated utilities.My Role includes the normal running and monitoring of these units in an effective way, including making adjustments for the alteration in product specifications or changes in feedstock.I am required to be highly competent in dealing with upsets and emergencies including fires and leaks and have regular training in this to ensure competency. Personally I work very well under pressure and enjoy this aspect of my job.Good communication skills are paramount to the role, as I am constantly giving instructions to the outside operators and communication with the other departments and units on the refinery.I am a natural leader, which helps in this role both in the normal running and especially in emergency situations.I am also responsible for the reviewing and keeping up to date the associated operating procedures with my area, and training and mentoring of the newer members of staff and those wishing to train on the panel

As a process operator my role is to look after the plant in the field to all the pre mentioned units, and also a Crude Distillation and VDU Unit.This includes the daily maintenance of the equipment and also some minor mechanical work i.e. Cleaning filters, heater burners, and the fitting of some small blinds or spades.As with all roles on a refinery good communication is essential especially with the Panel operator, making the key changes to the plant that they require.A in depth knowledge of the unit is essential to being able to operate it effectively and I have spent many hours in drawing out my own process drawings to all the units which I run.As on operator you are responsible for your unit and its safety along with that of the contractors and for this an in depth knowledge of work permits risk assessment and all the legislation associated with various jobs is required.

My First job in the petrochemical industry was as a general assistant in the refineries laboratory. My main role here was to collect the samples from the various sample points on the process units. These consisted of various gases, liquids and LPG samples.I was also responsible specifically for the testing of the Bitumen the tests I would carry out ranged from Density, KV, and Viscosity. At the request of the chemist I would also carry out other tests on various samples, as they required.
