Dr. de Vries is consultant internal / emergency medicine and infectious and tropical diseases at Tergooi, a general teaching hospital in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Hir previous work brought him to Vietnam and several countries in Africa for various projects on malaria, dengue, leptospirosis, leishmaniasis, septicemia and others. In his research he took different perspectives among which pharmacology, drug intervention trials, disease control and public health, social mobilization for and investment in health and shared ownership. His expertise of orphan drugs and drug regulatory affairs translates into scientific and advisory work to industry. Dr. de Vries headed the residents’ program for internal medicine in Tergooi, affiliated to the Amsterdam UMC for several years. He gives supervision and training to undergraduates, PhD students and residents of multiple nationalities in various teaching and research programs. He is currently involved with Finistech, an initiative of Prof. W. Mbacham, Fobang foundation, Yaounde, Cameroon. Finistech just started as an institute for higher education in biotechnology and science and will grow to an academic institution for bachelor, master and PhD students. Our vision, that science and technology should contribute to development, raises the bar for teachers and students in Africa. In a multidisciplinary program with outreach activities to society, students are being trained to become professionals with a keen eye for the needs of society.Dr. de Vries contributed to the creation and leading of several organisation such as Malaria No More! Netherlands, Foundation the 100th Village, the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria and the Virus Action Fund. He has a strong interest in the historical and philosophical context of medicine and health care. His current hobby entails the study of eighteenth century archives, covering the live and work of several VOC surgeons.
