Peter is a vastly experienced independent school leader having led schools for over two decades on both sides of the Atlantic. He holds an MSc in Educational Leadership and has been in the field for 40 years as a Mathematics Teacher, Rugby Coach, Boarding Housemaster, Assistant Head and Headmaster. He was a founding board member of the Meritas schools group and president of their Orlando schools. Over the years his defining successes have been underpinned by a fervour for improvement: Illustrations include; improving the rating of his UK school (which had failed its previous inspection) to “outstanding”, adding a high school in the USA, starting a boarding programme and introducing the IB programme. Having, over recent years, honed his financial and commercial skills Peter holds that many independent school leaders fail to address these deficiencies in their own competence:“Excellence in teaching and learning is, without question, the absolute and undeniable priority for any Head but many suppose that this can be realised by educational strategies alone. It is tempting to speculate that heads gravitate to this viewpoint because it corrals the solution within their field of expertise (and, of course, within the expertise of those they manage). In practice you cannot improve teaching and learning without effective staff and resource management and it is the role of the head to achieve this by harmonising the diverse educational, managerial and commercial aspects of the school.”
