Until November 2022, Head of Home News at Sky News, running home coverage across UK and Ireland, through six years of extraordinary news events.In addition to my journalism consultancy, I’m also interested in social issues, art, culture and sport — and would love to find a role as a non-executive director at a relevant organisation. My most interesting and enjoyable work in recent months has been lecturing on journalism to young international students at the Oxford and Cambridge summer schools programme; coaching television reporters and correspondents and coaching a public figure on how best to make their case when being interviewed by the news media. These have all involved face to face engagement. I have discovered I am not a huge fan of doing training on Zoom!Previously I was Managing Editor at Sky News, dealing with a range of editorial, strategic and organisational issues across Sky News, including Editorial Compliance and Editorial Standards. After more than four decades at the sharp end of journalism, I’ve stepped down for a life with a portfolio of work, both paid and occasionally voluntary when it relates to helping young people from poorer backgrounds to get into journalism. I am a volunteer with the Social Mobility Foundation. My special skills are probably about managing teams, helping broadcasters to improve their visual storytelling, news-gathering, and my keen interest in journalism standards and compliance. I consider myself to be a very good writer. I am also passionate about diversity in newsrooms and it can be demonstrated that, supported by others, I made significant positive change in the Home News department.
