While working at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, I led subject librarians through a period of uncertainty in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes.

Librarian, Scott Polar Research Institute
CurrentThe library service supports research into the contemporary significance of the Arctic, Antarctic and glaciology. The 91,000 catalogued holdings cover subjects from climate change to geopolitics and everything on snow and ice. Extensive special collections include archives, rare books, maps and photographs covering the history of polar exploration. During the period 2015-19 I project managed the National Lottery Heritage funded "By Endurance We Conquer - the Shackleton Project" which funded targetted acquisitions by the Library, Polar Museum, Archives and Picture Library. Over the same period, I led an I.T. project which migrated the Polar Library's catalogue from a pre-internet legacy database into the University of Cambridge's Alma library management system. I am a past chair of the Polar Libraries Colloquy steering group, and presented papers at the colloquies in Fairbanks, Rovaniemi, Quebec City and Tromsø. In addition to my substantive role I acted as the Polar Museum Curator for 5 months in 2023.

Research Support Manager
I led the library's support for research, advocating for open access through the University's senior leadership team. Outcomes included the creation of a fund to support open access publishing by early career researchers, the design and delivery of information literacy and research data management courses and the development of a draft open access policy. I was a member of the library's management team and represented the library on the University's Postgraduate Committee.

Academic Liaison Manager
As one of two Academic Liaison Managers I co-led a team of 20 subject librarians, line managing librarians supporting the Science, Engineering and Education Faculties. I also managed the Library's support for research. As a member of the Library's management team I helped manage the library service through a sustained period of earthquakes and earthquake recovery.
