Peter is the architect and led the development of the innovative distributed information system called TOPIC that underpinned the London Stock Exchange’s move from floor to screen trading at the time of Big Bang in 1986. Unlike the proprietary green screens that were then the norm, TOPIC used open standards, and featured colour screens to indicate price trends, blue for up and red for down, a convention has been widely adopted. Designed in the pre-internet age, TOPIC featured a standardised mark-up language, page to page hyper-links and an easy to use API to enable Exchange members and third-parties to contribute pages. It became a huge commercial success and grew to earn a third of Exchange revenues. He then co-founded and was the architect of the Tradepoint Investment Exchange, London’s first Alternative Exchange for trading equities that launched in 1995. Tradepoint was fully automated, executing orders through central Public Limit Order Books. Trading was conducted anonymously to reduce market impact costs. Tradepoint was the first Exchange to offer buy-side Direct Market Access connectivity, and support for algorithmic trading. Another first was clearing of equity trades via a Central Counter Party to mitigate the risk of anonymous trading. The Tradepoint model was to be adopted globally by most incumbent and new entrant Exchanges.Currently he is designing a next generation cloud-based platform for trading & delivering goods and raw materials on a global basis.
