My traditional background is in the area of Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience and at University I teach various courses, such as Positive Psychology to our final year students on the Psychology BSc (hons.) course. I am also the Programme Leader for LJMU's MSc Programme Positive Psychology & Wellbeing.I received fantastic training in experimental psychology, first at the University of Technology in Braunschweig and later at the University of Konstanz, where I completed my PhD under Prof Hübner’s supervision. Then I extended my expertise into the field of Cognitive Neuroscience, in particular by becoming expert in electrophysiological research (EEG). At the University of Liverpool I worked with Prof Müller (now University of Leipzig) and Prof Gruber (now University of Osnabrück) and was strongly involved in moving new methodologies forward.Then I moved my research into a more applied direction. Making use of all the expertise I was fortunate to accumulate, I started investigating meditation practice, the underlying processes and the resulting effects using the different methodologies psychology and cognitive neuroscience offer. Due to more than 30 years of personal engagement with meditation and many years of teaching meditation, I feel to be in this unusual situation of having insights into both domains, the scientific 3rd person approach and the 1st person approach of meditation, of becoming aware of own ongoing mental processes. I build on this in my research and am glad to be running a range of exciting projects.And I love sharing my understanding of the science of meditation outside of the academic realm.
