Communications Director
CurrentOver 40 years ago, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness helped bring about full Wilderness protection for the BWCAW, creating what would become America’s most visited wilderness area. Though it is officially protected, the BWCAW faces many threats, particularly from copper-sulfide mines. As communications director, I reshaped the organization’s identity around a positive message about the human connection with the wilderness and how the wilderness needs people as much as we need the wilderness. I made this messaging the foundation of a communications strategy that goes well beyond what would be considered “typical” for an environmental nonprofit and connected with people who would otherwise not be interested in environmental advocacy. Here’s some of what I do each day:*Maintain relationships with reporters, place stories *Write, edit, manage the production of four quarterly print newsletters*Write monthly eNewsletter update*Maintain an active presence on Social Media*Regularly publish blogs on a variety of topics*Shoot and edit videos*Support the development team with the creation of solicitation materials*Present at various venues on a number of topics*Works on the policy end of things, developing strategy and rolling out petitions, fact sheets, etc. *Maintain and update the website and optimize everything for SEOAnd so much more....
