About Peter Mcfarlane
I am an experienced IT professional with over 25 years of experience supporting a wide range of enterprise IT infrastructure within the Banking and IT Outsourcing industries. My latest role is with Worldpay, the online payments people. I'm going to be building up their UK monitoring team as the company is spun off as a separate venture. So a lot of exciting opportunities to deliver new monitoring capabilities (and like lots of people, I rather like the chance to do something a second time, knowing all the pitfalls to avoid). So watch this space as we start to recruit people.
Listed skills include Netbackup, Hp Ux, Unix, Disaster Recovery, and 2 others.

Monitoring Team Lead
Led a team of 12 engineers working on Capital One UK's monitoring systems. Provided a mix of day to day support, and project delivery work. Expanded the team with multiple new hires, helping to onboard them and supporting them with their development. * Successfully led the migration of Capital One UK's cloud infrastructure monitoring to NewRelic. * Deployed infrastructure monitoring, with an increasing focus on automation. This saved engineer time, and allowed us to put controls in place to check that new applications had this minimum level in place before they were allowed to go live. * Provided regular training and knowledge sharing sessions for our software engineering and support teams. These gave the engineers a basic grounding in the monitoring tools and how we used them as a business, and allowed us to push best practices and new features out to them. * Worked with the Service Level Management team to automate measuring SLO performance using data from the monitoring tools. The short term aim was to eliminate the huge amount of effort spent each month calculating SLO performance using spreadsheets. In the longer term this will massively improve the quality of our Observability metrics as we shift towards monitoring things the business cares about. * Provided support and consultancy on Observability to software engineering teams, enabling them to deliver better quality monitoring. This ranged from ad-hoc conversations through to embedding monitoring engineers in delivery teams for six weeks.* Worked with engineering and Service management teams to improve the quality of the monitoring, to better align monitoring with business requirements and Site Reliability Engineering principles. A lot of my time has been spent breaking down silos between teams trying to fix the same monitoring issues in isolation.* Worked to reduce the costs of monitoring AWS - this can get very expensive very quickly, so require a fair amount of effort to keep the costs down.
Various Engineering Roles
During this time I worked on a wide range of infrastructure projects, Here's a quick list of the main things I worked on. Monitoring• Replaced legacy log management tools with a solution based on Logz.io (a SaaS ELK stack). Worked with developers and support teams to migrate their logging over to the new solution, and helped them get the best value out of it. • Implemented a SolarWinds based solution for monitoring on-premise systems, and performed multiple upgrades and enhancements. • Led a major project to ensure PCI compliance of monitoring and management tools.• Deployed Oracle Enterprise Manager for Database monitoring. Batch scheduling• Led several upgrades of the BMC Control-M batch scheduling system.• Extended the BMC Control-M infrastructure in to Amazon Web Services. This included working with the vendor’s developers to add new functionality to their API to support automated builds. Delivered a presentation on this at BMC’s annual conference. Infrastructure as Code• Automating Linux server builds using solution based on VMware VCO/VRO, Chef, and GitHub. • Automated the addition of new servers and database to the monitoring and management systems.Storage• Implemented DataDomain virtual tape libraries with cross site replication to provide a Disaster Recovery solution for backups.• Deployment of new Cisco SAN hardware and EMC Isilon NAS storage.
