He said that’s where I would end up, if I didn’t work hard at school… Some years later, having left La Trobe without a degree, I was under the same paper machine removing broke. 42 years later, I was a Senior Quality Technician and the company had sponsored me to complete some post graduate study in Quality Management at Swinburne.I had been praying for a wife and Val for a husband. After meeting at church we were both a little surprised to be engaged after six weeks, married after six months, and in no time celebrating our 40th anniversary. Our three children are grown up and married with children of their own, giving us seven grandchildren so far.For 30 years I was an elder in the Traralgon Uniting Church and an active Lay Preacher, usually leading worship somewhere in Gippsland each fortnight. We were Bible Society representatives in Gippsland, started a Christian bookshop and were involved in bookselling for almost 30 years. I also had 11 years in community broadcasting and hosted FGBA outreaches.I've been known as a Christian while a union safety officer, member of the CFMEU Branch Committee of Management, member of the negotiating team for two Enterprise Agreements, and federal delegate for the Pulp and Paper Workers. Promoting employment in sustainable forestry and paper making, through the Maryvale A-Team.We have a continuing interest in the people of Vanuatu and keep in contact with a number of the forgotten men of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. It’s been said that the golden years for Lay Preachers are between the ages of 60 and 70. Having turned 68, I’m keen to make the most of this…I've been privileged to be a volunteer with the Victorian Council of Churches Emergencies Ministry, involved in Relief, Recovery and Outreach, when activated by Civil Authority during the bushfires.
