I am a scientist and research leader working in the area of high value add advanced manufacturing - within the field of "thin film coatings and surface engineering". Having worked in private industry for 10 years (SOLA Optical: 1993-2003) prior to joining UniSA, I have a particular interest in translating scientific knowledge into real world commercial outcomes. From within the academic environment, my research team engages extensively with private industry (both national and international companies) and played a major role in collaborating with an industry partner (Schefenacker Vision Systems / SMR Automotive) to commercialise the world's first OEM plastic rear-view automotive mirror. I was awarded the 2016 Clunies Ross Medal for innovation for this achievement. We are currently working with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) to research and develop first surface, IR reflective coatings for plastic windows. These coatings will actively reflect much of the heat component of solar radiation, helping to keep cars cooler whilst also extending the battery life of electric vehicles due to a reduced need to run the air-conditioner.I am currently establishing UniSA's Industry 4.0 Testlab, part of Australia's Industry 4.0 Testlab network comprised of UniSA, UTS, UTas, Swinburne, UQ and UWA. Our lab will have a particular focus on engaging with companies in the defence and space sectors, with capabilities ranging across product design, high-end additive manufacturing (including full colour 3D printing and metal printing), virtual reality and IoT platforms.
