Operations Manager - African Ranchers (Pty) Ltd.Eagles Pride Hatchery 2014 - 2020Limpopo, South Africa- Eagles Pride Hatchery is the largest independent supplier of day-old-chicks to the South African broiler market supplying three million chicks weekly. 28 production sites on 5 geographically distributed farms supply hatching eggs to five strategically positioned hatcheries.African Ranchers, owned by my partner and me, was sold to Eagles Pride Hatchery (Pty) Ltd between 2014 and 2017.- Production of hatching eggs for Eagles Pride Hatchery. Latterly expanded to three production sites annually producing +/- 20 million eggs - annual turnover +/- R65m. A fourth site is currently being planned. - 80 cow commercial beef herd - production policy to market weaners annually. Primarily to utilise the available land resource. Naturally occurring game species. - Responsible for the overall management of the above enterprises. Assisted by a farm manager, an administration manager, 3 junior managers and 63 farmworkers. - Principal tasks included planning, production, budgeting, maintenance, inventory and supply chain management, the primary HR function and occupational health and safety.- Consistently reached all targets developing the enterprises to world-class standards. - Regular expansion and improvement projects allowed for the fulfilment of the role of project management.- Most recently tasked I was tasked with an in-depth problem-solving research project.

General Manager – Buffalo Roses (Horticulture)I Glasser & Sons (Pty) Ltd 1994 - 2005Limpopo, South Africa- On the farm Buffelsdrift, a satellite property of I Glasser & Sons (Pty) Ltd, the key achievement was the development of an intensive climate-controlled greenhouse cut-flower enterprise aimed at exporting cut-roses to Europe and the flower auctions in Amsterdam. - With limited financial capital, the initial development was centred on developing an irrigated cash cropping venture to fund the core enterprise. From virgin ground, enterprises were developed to produce vegetables, paprika, winter wheat and later alfalfa as a perennial crop.- Due to changes in the market environment, the cut-roses project was diversified with the production of fillers, mainly Limonium sp.- In addition to production and project management, my functional roles also included maintenance, HR, financial, marketing and accounting disciplines. I managed a staff of between 30 and 40 employees. In 1998 the owners of I Glasser & Sons (Pty) Ltd sold their poultry business, and it was decided to formalise this farming business as a new entity and it became African Ranchers (Pty) Ltd, in which I was able to negotiate for the purchase of a 40% of the equity in this entity.

Production Farm Manager – Commercial Dairy FarmingMorton Haven 1991 - 1993Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa- Situated in the heart of the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands, the core activity of Morton Haven was fresh milk production, consisting of a 200 cow commercial Holstein dairy herd. 325 hectares of agronomy supplied fodder from irrigated winter ryegrass and summer Kikuyu grass pastures. Maize that was grown for making silage and Teff hay was planted and baled for winter fodder. Additionally, a small commercial beef operation existed to make use of marginal land.- My role as the farm manager was to oversee all the animal and field husbandry operations and included production planning, budgeting, HR & supply chain management. Not being labour intensive and my staff component was never exceeded 20 people.- During my tenure annual milk production was increased by 1050 litres per cow.

General Farm Manager – Tropical Fruit FarmingThe Bend Farm 1989 - 1991Mpumalanga, South Africa- The Bend Farm is located in the frost-free zone of the Mpumalanga low-veld.- Initially, the core enterprise was the annual production of 600 tons fresh guavas, 50% of the crop was distributed and marketed through the fresh produce markets throughout South Africa, the balance sold for juicing.- Other tropical farm-produce included avocados, litchis and macadamia nuts all produced for the export market. - Vegetable cash cropping for the local and National municipal markets was also undertaken.My tasks included production management, planning, budgeting, HR, supply chain and sales management. - It was a -labour-intensive operation and I had a staff complement of up to 60 employees during harvest.- A pilot aquaculture project was started to test the viability of catfish (Clarius garipinus sp.) in the local market. Market research revealed resistance to the fish species based on cultural factors, and the project was suspended.

General Farm Manager – Irrigated Coffee FarmingKofkor Grou 1986 - 1989Mpumalanga, South Africa- Established as an investment enterprise, Kofkor was funded using public money. The vision was to develop a wholly vertically integrated coffee production model. Launched with a glossy brochure and a promise of great returns to its investors. My background in coffee farming in Zimbabwe secured my employment as the general farm manager. - Despite a reliable gravity-fed quality water resource and fertile soils, the climate was not suitable, with excessive temperature extremes too high for high yields of Arabica style coffee, the project was jeopardised from the start.- My tasks included production management, planning, budgeting, HR & supply chain management for the core enterprise of 100 hectares mature Arabica coffee plantation and the development of a further - - 50 hectares Arabica coffee plantations under drip and micro-irrigation.- In addition to the coffee, annual irrigated cash cropping of cotton and vegetables was ongoing.- As a labor-intensive business and I employed a farm manager and up to 150 employees during harvest.

Technical Advisor – Ruminant NutritionEpol Animal Feeds (Pty) Ltd 1983 - 1986Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa- This position was a deviation from my previous practical farming positions. It was my only venture into the realms of commercial agri-business. I was employed as a technical sales advisor to farmers concentrating on ruminant nutrition.- Epol is a national animal feed company with branches throughout South Africa. - I regularly visited approximately 100 farmers mostly dairy and beef producers. My role was to provide technical nutritional advice, supporting the company’s sales objectives.In-service training included aspects of animal nutrition, computer literacy and Professional Selling Skills (PSS III) - Awarded Epol National Salesman of the Year – 1985.
