I have taken up a position as an Honorary Research Fellow in the Aerospace Division at Defence Science and Technology Group in Melbourne. I conduct research into aspects of Live Virtual Constructive Simulation and also liaise with international organisations to progress simulation standards.

Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is the Australian Government's lead agency dedicated to providing science and technology support for the country's defence and security needs. During this period provided S&T advice to Defence’s Capability Development Group for major Simulation Projects that aspire to create a Defence Synthetic Environment.Achievements include:• Developed plans for Science and Technology advice to major Defence simulation projects• Chaired DSTO workshops to assess Technical Risk• Developed Technical Risk documents for Projects• Ran technical working group meetings in Canberra to address high technical risks

Established distributed simulation training capability for Navy in conjunction with the US Navy during this period.Achievements include:• Project managed Maritime Warfare Training System (MWTS) study in 2002• Managed DSTO tasks in support of simulation• Liaised with Australian Navy and the USN• Developed presentations for major US simulation conferences such as I/ITSEC• Played a leading role in coordinating distributed simulation exercises for the RAN • Assisted with evaluation of proposals• Worked with international standards organisations to enhance interoperability between US and Australian Navy simulation training systems

Mine warfare modelling and simulation researchAchievements include:• Developed prototype operations research models for Mine Warfare Systems Centre• Provided technical expertise in Tender Evaluation process• Provided advice to Navy on latest technology sea mines• Posted to UK MOD during 1988 – 1989 to work in mine warfare modelling

Visiting Scientist at Admiralty Research Establishment, Bincleaves, Weymouth, UK. Research in the area of minefield simulation. Minefield planning and effectiveness models were developed to predict the threats from a proposed minefield using ship/mine encounter simulation results.

Finite-difference hydrocodes for the simulation of explosive shock dynamics were adapted and implemented to run on a vector-processing supercomputer. The product codes were consequently applied by other DSTO workers to study shock dynamics problems.

Study of structure of atomic nuclei using the electron as a nuclear probe. This research confirmed that the nuclear shell model was an appropriate theory to describe the structure of discrete, low-lying nuclear states.

Conducted tutorials and practical laboratory sessions for undergraduate physics students and both supervised and marked exam papers.

Investigation of decay modes of medium-mass nuclei excited by photon absorption. The results provided strong evidence for the single-particle nature of photonuclear processes. Also conducted laboratory sessions for undergraduate physics students.
