NYnet was established by North Yorkshire County Council (now North Yorkshire Council) in 2007, with the aim to improve connectivity and broadband services across the North of England for both the Public and Private Sectors. Launched initially in Sweden, OnePhone subsequently partnered with KPN to launch a joint venture in Germany and with BT in the UK. In April 2021 BT exercised their option to buy-out OnePhone’s 30% interest in BT One Phone, valuing the company at around GBP300m.

Microtel was formed in April 1990 as a consortium comprising Millicom (25%), Pactel Corporation (25%), British Aerospace (25%) and the French company Matra (25%). The following year, as a result of post-award changes made by the UK Government to the national WT & PTO licences , Millicom, Matra & Pactel sold their stakes to British Aerospace. BAe subsequently took Hutchison Telecommunications (UK) Ltd as a partner, who eventually acquired Microtel from BAe, renaming the company 'Orange'.
