I have always loved my culture, being black, the story and the history of who I am. But I never knew how I would express those feelings. Then I ran into glass. I took my cultural, urban experiences and blended it with Glass Blowing and that became my own little world of expression. It's called the World of Singleton. The World of Singleton LLC. is black culture celebrated through the material of glass. When I was first learning about glass art in Seattle, I went to plenty of galleries to see glass artists. And, it was always the same; cheese, crackers, wine, and soft conversation while walking around viewing art pieces. The artist would say a few words of thanks and a description of what we were seeing. To many, this was normal. But I'm from Chicago, an urban jungle of expression and began to miss the sights, sounds and in-your-face artistic experiences I grew up with.So, feeling dissatisfied with the current state of things, I decided to disrupt the status quo and create my own glass exhibitions that I called, "Gallery Nightclub Experiences." During these shows, instead of the traditional cheese, crackers and wine, I served fried chicken. In the place of the soft conversation, I hired a DJ and local Hip Hop and R&B indie artists as well as Performance Poets to entertain us. In the place of walking around viewing art, people danced and when it was time for the artist to say a few words, I jumped on the mic and did original poetry and songs while welcoming my guests to the modern day Harlem Renaissance known as, The World of Singleton.I was one of the only African Americans in the Glass Art industry and I wanted to make a name for myself and be a safe space for African American culture within the glass community. I put on my Gallery Night Club experiences many, many times at Nightclubs, Lounges, Cafes, etc. Anywhere that I could meet the people in a urban environment. I was the first one in the industry to put on a national glass art tour. I had the pleasure of doing shows in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Phoenix, Portland, Vancouver, WA and Seattle. It was amazing! My mentors are some of the best in the world and my supporters know my name! Welcome to the World of Singleton!
