I retired early from MOD in March 2017, after 32 years of dealing with a wide range of defence procurements plus training colleagues in commercial & contractual matters. After 2012 I focused on concepts for support & service delivery, including availability contracting. Now I indulge a long-held desire to work at The Tank Museum, Bovington, having volunteered there since June 2017 & relocated to Dorset. I recently undertook a 9-month interim appointment with MOD DIO & am still open to interim part-time opportunities, in Defence or the wider public sector where my expertise lies. I consider myself to be innovative, looking always to improve upon past failings & errors & find ways to deliver difficult required outcomes. I have been responsible for contracts & commercial matters for many things: general stores; hydrographic surveys; ship charters; sales of surplus; aerial targets; bridging equipment; air weapons; armoured vehicles; firearms; photographic equipment; batteries; construction plant; mechanical handling equipment; tank transporters; special forces mobility; deployable accommodation; outsourcing; support concepts. I ran the back office functions in 2 regional Defence Estates offices and produced & delivered CIPS-compliant commercial training for 4 years, including twice in Oman for the Omani MOD. I served in the TA as an NCO Sapper and signaller through the 90s.When I retired I had day-to-day responsibility for about £1.5Bn of current & future contracts for Defence-wide construction plant & mechanical handling equipment capability. My swansong was delivering a deal, held to be unachievable, to loan tank transporters leased to MOD under a PFI contract to the US Army in Germany. However, the time had clearly come to part company with MOD/DE&S & indulge my retirement aspirations in the Tank Museum direction. The only thing stopping me was me, and it was time to break that cycle. Brave or foolhardy? Well, after a couple of years of volunteering I now have a part time staff job there, which I enjoy very much among one of the world's greatest collections of 300+ AFVs. And I get to talk to people from all over the world about tanks. What's not to like?
