Following acquisition of the companies’ majority shareholding by private equity investors and as an existing senior manager within the business I was appointed to the board of directors as the SHEQ & Compliance Director. Burgess Marine was a multidiscipline marine engineering services provider to the commercial marine, defence and superyachts sectors of the marine industry. It undertakes a wide variety of activities including welding and fabrication, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical engineering, diving and underwater engineering, marine construction and infrastructure support across nine UK sites employing over 200 people.Key responsibilities:o Recruiting and managing a team;o Providing strategic guidance to the board and leading all SHEQ matters within the business;o Accident and incident reporting and investigation;o Driving cultural improvement throughout all levels of the business; o Producing monthly reports and statistical analysis of company performance for board review;o Management of the companies’ insurance portfolio;o Management of all HR matters within the business; o Coordinating the return of customer PQQ’s and tender packages.

Responsible for all SHEQ matters within the business across multiple sites/locations. When I joined the business had no formally documented management systems hence I authored and implemented an integrated management system and achieved ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2008 certification with BSI. I also achieved certification for diving operations with both DNV-GL and Bureau Veritas, latterly also Achilles UVDB Verify for the wider business. A process of expansion began which I assisted via the implementation of our integrated management system in place of existing management systems in a number of businesses that were acquired and absorbed by Burgess Marine, subsequently adding additional sites to our scope(s) of registration. Being responsible for all SHEQ matters my many responsibilities included (not exhaustive): o SHEQ audits and inspections; o Supplier approval and supplier audits; o Hosting customer and certification body audits;o Authoring new procedures, policies, inductions and systems to accompany business expansion and new activities; o Writing and delivering toolbox talks; o Regulatory body liaison and monitoring of changes to acts, regulations and ACOPs etc; o Certification body liaison re. the ongoing management and certification of ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2008; o Producing risk assessments, method statements and auditing compliance; o Production of CDM construction phase H&S plans; o Production of staff employment and SHE handbooks; o Completing customer prequalification questionnaires;o Accident reporting and investigation; o Management and response to employers and public/products liability claims;o Supporting line management with SHEQ issues and compliance.o Consultancy projects providing guidance, documentation and support to third party engineering projects.

In August 2005 Burgess Rail streamlined its activities and moved away from the labour supply business to become a solely track welding company. I remained with Burgess Rail and undertook the role of SHEQ Manager. Being responsible for all SHEQ matters my many responsibilities included (not exhaustive): o Responsible for the companies’ safety, health, environment and quality management systems;o Assisting with the management and organisation of welding resources, procurement, hire/lease contracts and insurance. o Writing a new management system and achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification; o Oversight and management of the companies Achilles ‘Link-Up’ certification and compliance with; o Providing part-time SHEQ advice and support to Burgess Marine, a sister company of Burgess Rail.

In this position I was responsible for the day-to-day management of the companies’ labour supply contracts and associated staff. Key responsibilities included:o Management, control and supply of labour (100+ staff) to numerous clients including: Balfour Beatty, Jarvis, AMEC Rail and Network Rail;o Generation of new business and maintaining customer relationships;o Direct line manager of over 100 engineering staff; o Responsible for all recruitment, disciplinary and other HR matters associated with the workforce;o Responsible for management and organisation of all tools, equipment and vehicles required by the workforce;o Implementation of operational SHEQ controls.
