In this role I was responsible for the financial management of large multi-country multi-thematic institutional governmental grants across Africa, Asia, and South America. This included complete oversight of all financial matters relating to grant activities and reported directly to the project oversight team for strategic decision-making. I was also a direct liaison with donors and reported directly to them on financial performance. This also involved co-ordination with auditors, both centrally in the UK and in partners’ offices overseas, to produce independent verification of reports.An important part of my role was identifying capacity and providing training of partners I worked with. This included due diligence, risk assessment and internal audit of overseas partners. I was also responsible for creating and contributing to a wide range of policies and procedures, both within the organisation and within the overseas partners.As part of my role, I also had line-management of several staff who had their own portfolio of grants. In this capacity I encouraged and supported staff, advised on strategic decisions and risk management, and investigated potential financial mismanagement.

Upon appointment, I was immediately responsible for investigating previous non-compliance of financial procedures and the rebuilding of the financial records. During this time, I have been working closely with the auditors and have received two clean audit reports.Alongside the rebuilding of the historical financial records I am also responsible for introducing and implementing a wide range of financial policies and procedures to dramatically improve the financial reporting across the organisation. I successfully introduced two new posts into the organisation which aided the day-to-day processing and financial monitoring both within BasicNeeds and with BasicNeeds’ partners. I have developed a transparent and proactive approach with donors, especially where I have identified failings in the past.I line manage a small team and am responsible for their supervision and support. I have trained team members in a range of areas, as well as carrying out inductions and appraisals. I work hard to ensure a collaborative and supportive environment within the finance team. As well as my direct line management responsibilities, I also support a number of overseas based finance officers.In my current role, I am a member of the Finance Sub-Committee and the Trustee Board and assist them in making financial and strategic decisions on the future of BasicNeeds, which has been challenging given increasingly limited funding. This involves pulling together all of the financial information across BasicNeeds’ international partners and programmes and producing management accounts and forecasts as well as various scenario planning tools and other ad hoc reports. I believe my impact at BasicNeeds has been instrumental in ensuring the financial infrastructure has been robust enough to encourage the trustees of the organisation to make the decision to move towards merger and the transition into the new charity.

In my role at FPP I was responsible for managing the finances of a number of large multi-country EU grants and smaller grants from Trusts and Foundations. This work involved the co-ordination of local partners and working groups dealing with different work themes (Legal and Human Rights, Environmental Governance, Responsible Finance) across a number of African countries. This work required the preparation of forecasts and budgets, financial monitoring, and donor reporting. I also worked with staff and partners to ensure they have the capacity to provide the financial information necessary to meet the strategic goals set for FPP’s work in Africa.

My role as Finance and Monitoring Co-ordinator at BasicNeeds involved monitoring overseas programme expenditure against donor budgets, including ensuring the appropriate match-funded expenditure took place. I co-ordinated the financial information provided by overseas programme managers and administrators in order to provide useful donor management analysis for the appropriate Directors. I was also responsible for donor finance reporting and ensuring that expenditure adhered to donor contracts. This often entailed working with the donors that range from the smaller trusts and foundations to large Institutional Funders such as the European Union, DFID (British Government) and Comic Relief.I also co-ordinated the UK and international financial information that came, either directly from overseas programme administrators or via the accounts assistant in order to ensure accuracy and correct disclosure. I provided support and training when necessary.On an annual basis, I produced financial statements for local overseas programmes. This involved direct liaison with the auditors involved in those audits and providing adjustments and management letter responses when needed. I also worked closely with the Finance Manager in pulling together and finalising the consolidated financial statements.I conducted regular field visits to overseas programme offices. The purpose of these trips often involved internal audit, one-on-one staff training and work on donor reports and budgeting.

My major role as Finance Assistant was compiling the financial information of the overseas programmes and making sure the data was accurate, and correctly disclosed. Using Sage MMS I produced variance analysis, which I used to help monitor expenditure and provide advice and training support where necessary.On an annual basis, I was heavily involved in supporting the Finance Manager in the production of the consolidated year end accounts, and the following audit. I produced many of the disclosure notes, as well as producing the financial statements for the local programmes for filing in their own countriesI was also responsible for the maintenance of Raiser’s Edge, a donor register used for recording income, and its reconciliation to the Sage database. I led two internal audits; in Ghana and Lao PDR.

A main responsibility, while at King Loose & Co was accounts preparation, which consisted of adapting the client’s accounts into filing format. This process required in-depth analysis, the preparation of control accounts and the construction of draft accounts. I was also responsible for the editing and presentation of the final accounts so that it was ready for filing. My work also involved bookkeeping. This involved using the original documents from a client to obtain various accounting information. From this information I prepared management accounts and regularly dealt with the completion of VAT returns. I also gained some basic knowledge in the preparation of payroll. I attended a number of large audits, whilst managing a number of smaller audits myself. In order to gain key information I often communicated with a wide range of clients, both face-to-face, and via telephone and e-mail.
