President And CeoAlberta Ingenuity Fund 2004 - 2009Reported to a private sector Board of Trustees. Operations funded from interest from a $900 million endowment fund. Focussed the organization and made major investments in innovative programs in support of the priorities of the Province of Alberta in nanotechnology, prion research, water research, and the development of knowledge-based industries. Hired staff and developed programs from the ground up. Grew the organization at a compound annual growth rate of 30% per year from an expenditure level of $10 million per year to over $50 million per year over five years. Managed through the 2008/2009 financial downturn while avoiding negative impacts upon programs. Launched the Nanotechnology Accelerator, with an allocation of $80 million and started five new Alberta Ingenuity Centres for Research and Commercialization, bringing the total to nine. Created the Len Bolger Award, the Prion Institute, the International Genetically Engineered Machines Program, the NanoWorks Program, the Water Institute, and various entrepreneurship and science communications programs including Ingenuity Enterprise, Iron Science Teacher, Science Cafes and strategic alliances with Science Alberta Foundation and the Alberta Science Fair Foundation. Integrated various graduate student scholarship programs across Alberta. Expanded the Industry Associates program to over 300 associates working in over one hundred and sixty companies in Alberta creating a neural network of innovation in Alberta along the way. All documented in the 2008 Annual Report, The Ingenuity Way, and in the four additional reports and program evaluations that accompany it.Budget: $55 million per year Direct Reports: 6 Indirect Reports: 24
