The Basic Aviation Risk Standard Program operates in support of international organisations which rely on aviation to conduct their operations. The sectors the Flight Safety Foundation's BARS work within include onshore and offshore resources, humanitarian and government. As well as providing day to day management of the Program, the role also includes design and development of key structural elements of the Program.

The Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) is a risk-based model framed against the actual threats posed to aviation operations, particularly those that occur within challenging and remote environments. The role encompasses:- Managing the BARS Audit Program to ensure the best outcomes for BARS Member Organisations, Aircraft Operators, BARS Audit companies, and the Flight Safety Foundation.- Ensuring consistency and accuracy of auditing, data, and reporting, through standardisation and quality control.- Development of internal systems, and drafting and publication of supporting controlled documents and manuals.- Coordinating and undertaking research into BARS Program improvement internally, and in a wider scope in conjunction with aviation focussed universities.- Testing BARS controls and defences to identify and define improvement opportunities in the BAR Standard.- Enacting the resolutions of the BARS Technical Advisory Committee, and strategy as defined by the BARS Program Director.

During this course extensive knowledge and practical experience was attained. Undertaking a sizeable research project I employed Resilience Engineering techniques to evaluate the real world impact of safety and quality management, and standards in aviation. This research enabled me to identify solutions to improve the functioning of systems with a focus on practical operational application.I am also skilled in the fields of risk measurement and management, fatigue risk management, human factors instruction, crew resource management, system and procedure design, human reliability analysis, fault and event tree analysis, and can employ a wide range of causation models for incident and accident investigation or predictive purposes.

The ABC is Australia’s national broadcaster. After writing the successful tender response to secure the contract, the role was to manage and perform delivery of rotary wing services. I flew in support of varied activities; news gathering, coverage of major bush fires, investigative journalism and documentary film making activities. I was approved Head of Aircraft Airworthiness and Maintenance Control for the AOC, and designed and managed a safety management system which integrated flight and engineering organisations. The system was well embraced and reduced measured risk by 84% in the first year of operation.The role also provided the opportunity to be involved with the inception of ABC’s remotely piloted aircraft program. For which I provided advice, delivered human factors support including hierarchical task analysis and human reliability analysis in order to improve the output of the program.

After writing the successful tender document to secure the contract, I developed standard operating procedures and training programs for pilots and crew at Surf Life Saving WA. Both with the contracted company (Heliwest) and with Surf Life Saving directly. Flew numerous aerial patrols, static line rescue and demonstration flights.

Moving on from there I played an instrumental part in developing a service centre for Robinson Helicopters, and wrote a number of successful tenders, securing large volumes of business.In addition I undertook flying duties, instructed students in rotary wing flight and performed lead pilot roles in remote area surveys and in operations for Surf Life Saving WA.
