Created and established this IT support business, to provide a unique Pay-as-You–Use service, primarily to businesses in the East Midlands. Our research showed that SME’s needed support from a professional and experienced team. Initially starting with no clients or employees, we grew the business to a turnover of £600k+, employed 8 technical and administrative staff and had a regular customer base of 300+. For these clients a complete IT service was provided working as their internal IT department. Core values were established including: team approach, fully documented work, uniformed staff with very good communication and technical skills. Over the years we developed a client base across numerous business sectors enabling us to recommend or introduce best practices. Business development was achieved by recommendations and attending business networking events (we were founder members of several of these successful groups). We sought and gained customers in other parts of the country and these were supported both remotely and by regular site visits. Established a franchise model for this service and successfully launched it. After 10 successful years building a valuable reputation, recognised brand and good profits, the business was sold to enable both partners to develop new independent careers.

I was initially, employed by this International PLC, which specialises in fabrics and wall coverings, as the deputy operations manager, located within the groups computing headquarters in Leicestershire. I was responsible for the groups computing resources across 14 trading companies in 6 countries. The company brands included Muraspec, Harlequin, Zoffany and Cole & Sons. Initially I implemented of a major systems change for these companies. Over the following years I worked on changing the team from being “a cost centre to the group”, to it being a professional team which became “a profit centre” for the group. During this time several companies were acquired and sold, which involved them being integrated into or removed from the group’s computer systems. This required numerous database and hardware migrations. I was responsible for implementing the group’s early adoption of Internet and Email services including integration of the European and American offices to the groups’ Wide Area Network utilising Internet technologies. Managed the implementation of the group’s voice network which reduced the overall costs. I was promoted to Production Services Manager.

Recruited for a new forensic computer department based in New Scotland Yard, which was responsible for fingerprint matching. This department worked with the Home Offices to develop the fingerprint scanning equipment which has now become common place. I progressed though the Civil Service grades, and was responsible for a shift of 10 staff working a 24 x 7 shift pattern.
