Making Waves is an educational opportunity program that supports low-income high school students from Richmond, CA. I began working with Making Waves as a tutor, specializing in math and history. In 2004, I came on full time to design and coordinate the Math Empowerment Program initiative, providing personalized, proactive math support classes to Making Waves high school students attending schools throughout the Bay Area. Over the first three years of the program, Math Empowerment grew to… Show more Making Waves is an educational opportunity program that supports low-income high school students from Richmond, CA. I began working with Making Waves as a tutor, specializing in math and history. In 2004, I came on full time to design and coordinate the Math Empowerment Program initiative, providing personalized, proactive math support classes to Making Waves high school students attending schools throughout the Bay Area. Over the first three years of the program, Math Empowerment grew to support 150 students each year, staffed by 12 math instructors who provided 1-on-1 and small group lessons. I designed the program structure, managed and trained a staff of professional educators, developed curriculum, and continuously worked with students at instructional and administrative levels. I left Making Waves briefly for an instructional opportunity in India and to provide after-school programming in the Oakland Unified schools. Study Hall School is a private school in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh India. I came to the school as a visiting mathematics instructor, working with local teachers in four remedial math classes (classes VI through IX). In addition, I worked with Prerna, an after-school program at Study Hall designed for young women from the urban slums of Lucknow. There, I taught one Hindi-medium course in Class VIII mathematics.
