About Peyton Birchler

I am an artist and art lover with a demonstrated history of working in the fine arts, from diving into every department a large museum can have to embarking on solo projects as the sole employee of a small gallery. I have also worked as a small business assistant for several years (for artists, more often than not) so I am familiar with the demands of creative industries. I am skilled in art handling, customer service, event support, research, art criticism, social media/website management, digital photography/editing, and written communication, and I am interested in pursuing a master’s degree in either Art History or Historic Preservation when the time is right. While on a break from the fine arts I have taken on roles in real estate and property management, deepening my interest in historic preservation, architecture, and land history. My resume is expansive and I am always seeking new knowledge. My personal time is consumed by writing (novel tba) and collage, which I have recently been expanding to creative projects for artists near and dear to me.

Project: A Thematic Curriculum of Museum Collections for Educational and Public UseThis was a summer-long project in which I, under the direction of the museum's education curator, created an educational packet that thematically sorted the museum's permanent collection into six groups in order to make drawing connections between time, place, and people easier for school-age children and visitors at the museum who are unfamiliar with art and cultural history. For the sake of time, I focused on the Sponenburgh Gallery, which contains HFMA's ancient, Asian, medieval, Christian, and European pieces. This project was also intended to make the past's relevance to our present clearer, as the museum has many ancient and medieval objects in its collections that seem to puzzle younger viewers, who are not inclined to recognize them as art. These six groups were Place, the Constructed World, Belief Systems and Religion, Economy and Trade, Aesthetics and Beauty, Identity, and Communication. Each group had subgroups that highlighted very specific features of the works that may have gone unnoticed. Since this project only featured one gallery within the permanent collection, I intend to expand it as much as I can before I graduate from the university; it also has the potential to become a web-based curriculum.
