Department Of Energy - Golden, Co

Served as Contracting Officer and Grants Specialist. Created hundreds of awards for renewable energy research and then served on the Closeout Team, responsible for closing more than 2,000 awards. Previously worked as Contracting Officer Representative, serving as a liaison between Contract Officers and other key personnel in the Golden Field Office to create contracts and agreements with renewable energy recipient organizations (universities, for-profit and non-profit research firms). As a Grants Specialist, I worked in conjunction with scientific and technical experts to administer grants in the DOE Geothermal Program, requiring a working knowledge of Federal grant regulations and practices, including NEPA guidelines and other standard rules. From 1998 to 2004, I worked at the DOE Office in Golden as a Contract Employee, performing similar work as described above, in a supporting role.

Over 25 years I served at various locales as a Station Manager, Program Director, Production Director, News Director, and Music Program Producer. Locations include WHYY-FM, Philadelphia; KUVO-Denver; KPRN/ Colorado Public Radio, Grand Junction; KVNF, Paonia; and WXDR/WVUD at the University of Delaware

I served as Program Director and Public Affairs Producer for a rural public radio station in Western Colorado, with a network of radio translators that delivers KVNF's signal to seven Western Colorado counties; the potential audience reached is between 150,000 and 200,000 people. Station broadcasts include a variety of locally-produced music, news, and public affairs programs, and news from around the world provided by National Public Radio and independent sources. In some locales, KVNF is the only station available on the radio dial. Local and regional topics addressed on the air include natural resource management, rural economic development, and health care. I also assisted in the writing of a U.S.Department of Commerce PTFP grant to secure funding for an associate radio station for KVNF in Montrose, Colorado.

For 7 years, I was based in Grand Junction and traveled extensively in Western Colorado to report on a wide array of topics, including rural health care and electrification; the extensive role of various Federal agencies including the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation. More than half of the land in Western Colorado is Federal land and I reported on ongoing issues and conflicts between Federal managers and the people who live nearby. In my 7 years I earned a dozen feature reporting awards on topics such as public land grazing, the rural electric co-op system, natural resource development, and the challenges of providing rural and remote health care.In 1989 - 1991, about half of my time was spent with fundraising and generating community awareness in several Western Colorado communities (Craig, Montrose, Gunnison, Parachute, and Rifle) for a series of translators that were installed for the KPRN signal from Grand Junction. I coordinated community meetings in those communities and spearheaded fundraising efforts to pay for translator equipment. I also assisted the KPRN-based engineer with installation of translators in Meeker, Craig, Gunnison, Montrose, and Ouray.

Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Station Manager for three years; overseeing budget, personnel, and programming decisions at an NPR affiliate. Wrote successful U.S. Department of Commerce PTFP grant for transmitter and studio equipment.Operations Manager for one year; overseeing programming and announcer schedule, operation logs and equipment update logs and maintenance issues.News and Production Director; Produced news and feature reports; some of which aired on National Public Radio news programs. Trained student reporters and scheduled news program hosts and special news programs during election coverage.

Greater Philadelphia Area

Served as a Reporter for nightly news program "91 Report"​; worked with five Reporters to assist them with their news production efforts, when called upon (I usually wasn't needed for this role, but was rather assigned my own stories for the program). Reports included: City politics, including a disruptive city council meeting following the ABSCAM indictments of 4 City Council members (my report won an Armstrong award for spot news coverage). Other topics included preparations for the Atlantic City casino boom; Delaware's 1980 credit card banking law, ticket scalpers during the 1980 baseball playoffs and World Series; street hawkers selling their merchandise during the Pope's visit in 1979; and the plight of migrant workers in the mushroom industry of Chester County.

University Of Delaware - Newark

Served as Program Director as WXDR signed on as an FM radio station. I was one of several students involved in getting the station on the air. It was a 3 year effort involving a lot of work and cooperation from a once reluctant university administration. We laid the groundwork for a station to present a wide variety of music and news/discussion programming which continued in later years with the transition to higher-powered WVUD-FM.
