About Phil Chapman

My dad was a mechanical engineer, when the other kids were reading Willie Wonkers Chocolate Factory I buried myself in the Shell Petroleum Handbook. As a kid I was always making things, but when the door shut on a career in engineering I turned to computing. Despite being a self taught programmer and studying systems analysis for two years my first IT job was telesales. It was the 90’s when Britain still made stuff, I overhauled the companies sales material and began coming up with cheap “bits products” to take advantage of free advertising in the “new product sections” of magazines. My stuff was pretty radical, one product increasing the old school parallel printer cables from 15m to 305m's for £20. My crowning glory however was “Octobus”, a pre networking multi-user serial card made on a shoe string budget that saw us oust Sanderson Computing on a retail job in Ireland. (that did not go down well).I joined a national bulk computer retailer in the mid 90’s, became one of it’s top 10 salesmen, then fell out of favour when I discovered that the signs on the building “big on service” was the last thing the jokers were interested in. Joining a colleague who also left company, I had an unofficial apprenticeship in computer repair/installation running consultancy on the side. Building a Microsoft Maps & Excel, building an accurate estimating and billing system for a small transport firm. Heading back to my home town in 1999, I setup my own place and immediately started tinkering again. Building an Xbox in 2000 plumbed into a VGA equipped Lowe TV. 2002 we designed an NT based 4 room audio system fully controlled by a web app deployable to PDA’s, laptop and PC. 2003 saw me demonstrating commercially viable DVD to HD720 upscaling to JVC Professional. 2004 I was in front of Interbrew with an advanced Digital Signage Solution.Sadly many of my ideas were too early and too disruptive and I made lousy choices of business partners.I began MVS in 2011, despite what Hollywood and Marvel say... Multiverse actually means Multi dimensional, Versatile, data Solution. MVS was a mainframe IT concept using a cross platform browser interface to replace the traditional terminal. The back-end system being “big data”, cloud, SaaS, PaaS, No-SQL, API's and Dev-Ops for literally decades.Too fast, too reliable, too cheap, too much of a threat to mainstream IT. After 3 years in Manchester trying to pitch this product to people who simply could not understand it, or did but saw it as a threat. I gave up and put it down as the only product I have ever failed to sell.

Director/Business StrategistPrecision, hard surface & organic digital 3D modeller3D resin print settingMarketing/E-Commerce/I don’t think I have ever used so many of my accumulated skills so often, as I have on this project.A hobby turned business idea. Railroads & Railways more accurately is a digital 3D printing house with a direct marketing component. Licensing the use of my 3D models. R&R print, package and market product directly to model railway enthusiasts. Facebook/YouTube used as initial drivers of traffic to an online catalogue/portal. Later to be supplemented by a “show team,” trained by me incorporating retail & demonstrator elements. Part of a carefully crafted sales/marketing strategy.Story..Railroads & Railways began loosely in 2020. Covid confined and looking after my dad following a stroke, fall, and head injury rusulting in dementia, April of that year. I needed an engaging activity, like many I decided to build a model railway. My chosen subject Austrian Narrow Gauge was difficult to obtain in a good year, covid shortages would demand I get creative with the custom buildings & scenics, I needed. However picking up where I had left off as a professional modeller 28 years ago, was not just like riding a bike. I bought a 3D printer and began tinkering. The first thing I do when presented with something new, is find out how it works and I apply that equally to technology, processes or a business. The industry..In 2021 the UK model railway hobby posted a turnover of £26 million with steady 4% - 6% year on year growth. 4 new rolling stock manufacturers have entered the market, challenging established manufacturers Hornby & Bachmann. Seeing a renaissance the hobby the train set evolved into the model railway with detail and authenticity becoming a key selling point. Older Hornby stock, first released in the 1970’s still sits on shelves, while transportation problems and manufacturing closures in China are effecting new stock availability.

Becoming totally disillusioned with commercial IT in 2017, I bugged out. I did a bit of jobbing IT, wrote a back-end spreadsheet for a small chain of Hallmark card shops, saving a good 1.5 days of admin a week, with the added benefit of an ability identify till errors. In hind site I should have marketed that.2018 saw me in on another “smart home” job that turned full nightmare starting with my dedicated network cabinet being replaced by an upright freezer, given a kitchen cabinet as a replacement. Using 3D modelling I made everything fit... the networking, phone distribution, hubs/switches, 4k CCTV system, TV distribution and gate entry system. Presented with an awful set of architect plans for the next property, a barn conversion. I would use 3D modelling again to build a fully detailed and to accurate model.2020 brought the lockdowns and needing to look after my ill dad. I needed a hobby so I decided to build a model railway, choosing H0e Austrian narrow gauge that would require much of it to be built from scratch....... but I was a star model maker back in 90's. It was not like riding a bike and I had lost my Mojo. Thinking back to the "smart home job" maybe I could 3D model what I needed.I busied myself making 3D models then printing them, but like most things I do I have a need to pull a job apart and see how it works. I began to spend more time testing, how to make it print rather than printing actual models. A key issue on the printing forums was the transfer of an on-screen object to the physical build plate of the resin printer. Working out what faces will print, reorientating the model to produce detail or limit print lines is a skill in itself. One I began to master and more importantly build into the model during the actual modelling. The technology is fascinating and I’m getting more out of it than I am seeing posted on forums. Not sure what direction this is going to go in….

Business Development Manager MVSMarketing Manager/First line SalesDuties - re-evaluation of the Product & its Market, re-brandingThe Multi-User Versatile Solutions Platform or MVS for short, is not the most well known Computer System on the market. Typically deployed behind the closed doors of Corporate/Banking and a wall of Non Disclosures. It is however widespread and has a quiet reputation for fixing failing Mainstream IT projects quickly and efficiently. A Multi-User, Multi-Tasking Applications Platform integrated with a unique Multi-Dimensional Database. Apart from a great deal of Multi.. It continues to be a Core Solution fulfilling bulk User and Data Processing requirement and is often employed to do the heavy lifting in Transactional Data & Analytic's in support of Enterprise Solutions. With the potencial to do a lot more, I have been working within this technology and mainstream IT to carve out a niche to establish a base to launch this platform into the SME market. SaaS and PaaS for decades the architecture is ideal for a variety of Enterprise/Cloud roles and could easilybe aplied to Retailing, Warehousing, MRP, ERP and even XML Document Management.

    Owner
Bliss Av Ltd Jun 2005 - Jul 2012
Sales, Marketing and Business Development Director.Started as a development project loosely based upon a digital signage solution. The main aim of the Bliss project, Better Living Involves Serious Spending... Was development of a Smart Home Solution incorporating both Media Storage/Distribution and Home Automation. Based upon a thin/client Linux platform. A central Server connected over CAT5 to a home wide network of disk less room players hooked into local AV, large format TV's and automation. With simple control via Web Interface either internally or by secure dial in connection.Web based, this supported a varied range of control using Laptop, PDA, Tablet and mobile phone. More advanced than anything on the market at that time, many of its features are still advanced by today's standards.Despite securing orders and interest from a number of prominent companies (one built boats, very big expensive boats) the project failed to deliver a solution at the 11th Hour through "technical slippage". Following the loss of a key Technical Asset, the company was unable within its time frame to re-acquire the technical advantage it had. Low tech solutions using Windows were developed using the XBox and Disk less Mini PC's. The project was finally ended in 2011, maintenance continues on existing installs.Key Technical Achievements:Development of NAS Router technology as early as 2004Boot Operating System from Flash/SSDHDMI Video Distribution over CAT5HDMI Video Up scalingPower Line data networkingCCTV over CAT5 (2005) The CAT5 CCTV Balun appeared in 2007Large site Structured Cabling Solutions 2004Lighting dimmer solution using Florescent Tubes/Strip Lighting (all me that one)Concept design of 250 Terabyte network storage solutionsFull TEVO Solutions in 2005Development of Flex/EPIA Mini/Micro ATX terminal solutionsTouch InterfacesBlue Tooth triangulationAnd so much more.

Probably the most impressive feature of this technology was a Video Up-scaling Solution capable of converting DVD to HD 720 in real time, presented to JVC Professional in 2003.Despite firm orders and a great deal of interest from a number of pub chains and the international brewers Interbrew, the project was to fail through late software delivery and other issues.I left the company in 2005.
