Highly qualified, with a PhD in ecological engineering related to the creation of wetland habitats within former industrial land, Phil has extensive experience leading client teams towards biodiversity-positive outcomes, ensuring that costs are balanced with sustainable large-scale biodiversity gain opportunities. Notable projects have included: the design of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Scheme mitigation wetlands; assessment, design and monitoring of a CIWEM Living Wetlands award-winning wet grassland re-creation scheme Aston Hall Farm; and most recently the 2019 Mineral Planning Association Cooper-Heyman Cup award-winning fen and reedbed creation project at Ripon City Quarry. These examples clearly illustrate Dr Fermor’s ability to apply cutting-edge biodiversity knowledge in an engineering context and deliver the recovery of nature.As a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and member of the British Hydrological Society, Phil promotes sustainable habitat design through the application of a detailed understanding of site-specific requirements (sediments, topography, hydrology, and existing biodiversity features) and local biodiversity strategies. His proven ability to work closely with commercial and corporate clients, third-sector organisations and government bodies, as well as having an in-depth understanding of business-needs and the science of the natural environment, is key to delivering successful biodiversity net gains. As Managing Director for over 20 years, Dr Fermor was responsible for business development and company management with a priority of client engagement. Phil was directly responsible for managing a team of 75 committed members of staff in addition to numerous subcontractors. He also managed a range of large commercial consultancy projects, including biodiversity masterplanning, hydroecological assessment, biodiversity action planning and strategy for corporate clients, and staff training. Dr Fermor gained his PhD through extensive research into the hydrology of wetland habitats within former industrial land. During his time at Middlemarch Environmental Ltd he worked with a range of clients with respect to their hydroecological requirements, designing CIWEM and MPA award-winning wetlands. Phil also oversaw the Company’s Ecological Impact Assesment work and the preparation of the ecological aspects of Environmental Statements for a variety of major infrastructure schemes. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Wildlife Trust Consultants (WTC) group, acting as Vice-Chair and Secretary.
