Following 6 years at Barratt London as Regional Technical Director at Here East, Stratford and divisional Technical Director for their Aldgate Division, Phil has recently set up a new business venture, running his own Project and Development management company Phdd Ltd. He has over 30 years experience in design, development and construction delivery. Phil has a proven capability in leading and managing design and development activities on multi and major projects and has a great mix of technical knowledge, strategic thinking and leadership in development delivery and proven people management skills. An architect by background, where he worked in private practice for 6 years, Phil then spent 8 years as a Project Manager and Business Development Manager in the public housing sector before spending 9 years with Laing O’Rourke as Design Manager and then Head of Design Management. From 2003 to 2007, Phil oversaw the growth of the Design Management function at Laing O’Rourke and prior to moving to Lend Lease, led a group of over 70 Design Managers and was responsible to the Board for people, process/procedure and relationships with designers. Living in North East London, Phil then took up a role as Design Director working for Lend Lease on the Athletes Village project in Stratford, taking a lead role in developing and implementing design strategies across the project. Development Design DirectorLend Lease Retail And Communities Feb 2008 - Jan 2010Joined the London 2012 Athletes Village project (approx £1.2B) at Stratford leading a team of development project managers across the project. Responsible for directing key development and design operations across the project, interfacing with consultant designers , setting design briefs and requirements, managing cost planning controls, determining key opportunities and constraints within the master plan and interfacing with the Partner RSL - First Thames. Major drive for offsite manufacture and modern methods of construction - project was being delivered with precast concrete facades and cladding (scaffold free) and bathroom pods. Lend Lease were the development partner of the ODA delivering approximately 2800 apartments (a mix of rented and intermediate affordable units, market base and market premium apartments) and a new 1800 pupil academy across 12 plots. Had specific hands-on responsibility for delivering 600 apartments on 2 of the plots. The project was being delivered under a very complex S106 planning agreement and was being developed to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes 4* rating, Building for Life Gold standard and Secured by Design. Working closely with Lend Lease’s construction delivery partner Bovis Lend Lease, developed very strong One Team approach to design , procurement and delivery solutions. -
Head Of Design ManagementLaing O'Rourke Nov 2003 - Jan 2008Responsible to the Board for leading and developing the Design Management function for all tender, pre-construction and construction projects – around 60-70 projects in all and with an annual turnover of around £650M. Responsible for recruiting, deploying and managing all design management staff, from graduate intake to Design Leader level, for setting out process and procedures relating to design delivery and for managing relationships with key designers. Significant role also in promoting the BCR programme, digital prototyping and engagement with Eigen, Laing O’Rourkes Indian technical support group. -
