As COO my responsibility was for all aspects of operating a customer focussed, financial institution in a highly regulated environment, ensuring adherence to robust governance protocols, mitigating critical risks whilst remaining commercial.

In a challenging economic environment led the restructure of the West of England business (c£1.3bn assets, 120 FTE) incorporating Corporate & Structured Finance, Commercial, Agri, Small Business and Private banking) resulting in the centralisation of all admin and support functions, re-alignment of segments and roles, closure of unprofitable centres, and a c46% reduction in regional FTE (to c55) - all achieved within 9 months and ahead of both schedule and budget. The 3 year strategic plan then entailed rebuilding confidence and morale after such heavy redundancies, a focus on improving risk management, enhancing trust in senior management, and creating a sense of pride and belonging in the region in year 1, improving our customer, staff, risk and financial metrics against the average in year 2, and being “Better than the Best of the Rest” in year 3 (achieved by the end of year 2 across nearly all scorecard metrics).

Recruited to drive new mid-market corporate business in the North West using my long established network of senior level contacts in the region. Within the first year had personally delivered in excess of c£3m of income, including the North West deal of the year (Betfred's £265m acquisition of the Tote), whilst also lending my support to the Corporate, Acquisition Finance and Commercial teams. Promoted to Regional Director in April 2012 with responsibility for the North West and Midlands Corporate & Structured Finance businesses comprising 34 FTE.

Recruited to generate new business opportunities in the North West which had historically been serviced unsuccessfully from London. Notwithstanding the financial and economic crisis, and operating as the sole G&AF representative in the North was responsible for generating (via corporate finance advisers, PE houses and direct approaches to corporates) in excess of 170 funding opportunities, 10 of which we chose to and successfully took through the credit process (EVs ranging from £5m – £130m).

Recruited to help set up and build a new Debt Advisory business within the UK Corporate Finance division (and the first specialist debt advisory team outside of London). Remit to build a London and Regional mid-market practice advising corporates and professional financial investors (eg Private Equity houses) on debt solutions relating to acquisition funding, leveraged buyouts/buyins, refinancings, development funding and restructures. 30 Private Equity and corporate deals completed (fee income of c£6m in year 2 alone).

Responsible for the Corporate & Structured finance offices in Manchester and Leeds, executing a wide variety of leveraged transactions including corporate acquisitions, MBOs, P2Ps and refinancings (deal extracts below). Role entailed ensuring we saw (and delivered) the majority of deals done in our market, whilst maintaining rigorous credit quality standards. Member of the Corporate Banking and Financial Markets Leadership Group, and the North of England Corporate Banking Board, as well as chairing first stage credit and Portfolio committees.

Helped set up the Corporate & Structured Finance business in Jan 2002 and appointed Regional Director in Manchester with the objective of building the business into being the leading mid-market provider of senior debt and mezzanine to the private equity and corporate acquisition market. Ran team of fee earners and grew income from £7m in year one (y/e Dec 2002) to £11.8m (y/e Dec 2004) with no increase in headcount. In first three years completed 59 deals with a combined deal value of £5.3bn. Exceeded income targets in every year whilst retaining a high quality portfolio – no crystallised provisions/losses. Voted (by the CF community) North West Banker of the Year (2002, 2003, 2004) and Bank of the Year (2002, 2004) (NW Business Insider awards).
