SGR is an independent UK-based membership organisation of about 1000 natural and social scientists, engineers, IT professionals and architects. We promote science, design and technology that contribute to peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability.Continuing work on the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons and a campaign by over 120 countries to establish a treaty banning the possession and sue of nuclear weapons in the same way that chemical weapons, cluster munitions and mines are treated.Information provided to delegates at the Norwegian hosted conference Oslo March 2013.Nayarit, Mexico, February 2014 and Vienna December 2014.Other SGR work includes advice on ethical careers for young scientists & engineers, publications - for example examning the undue influence that the military and major commercial organisations have upon research priorities and universities in particular; suggestions for reform of government spending priorities to prioritise clean and low carbon energy, a practical rather than rhetorical support for peace building rather than force projection; cancellation of the Trident nuclear submarine and missile R&D and planned purchase.SGR is affiliated to the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES)

Greater Leeds Area

Working with Leeds Sustainable Research Institute on analysis of low carbon programmes of work and investment at City, Regional, national scale.A large scale study of the impacts of the West Yorkshire Warm Zone scheme funded by the Sainsbury Family Trusts into carbon reductions at small geographical scales (MLSOA- medium level super output area) and behavioural factors on scheme uptake.From analysis of actual energy use by MLSOA we found strong evidence that loft and cavity wall insulation has reduced heating energy consumption over a 4 year period leading to susbstantial reductions in household energy usage.
