Philip B. is a Senior Director, Software Engineering at GitHub. Colleagues describe him as "Phil is a true find. Not only is he an outstanding engineer but also has the business acumen and communication skills to be a killer product manager. Phil was able to not only take complete ownership over one of the more complex components of the platform, but re-envisioned it to better align with the overall market. His strategy for the product not only excited engineers, both internal and partner, but he also though around corners and had informed opinions on how to solve adoption/change management.", "I've worked closely with Phil for almost 3 years. For awhile, just as peers and later on the Partner Tooling team, he was my Engineering Manager. Working with Phil has been a great highlight during my career at Symphony Commerce. We would consistently throw ideas around and learn from each other as he built out the Site Experience team and its spiritual successor the Partner Tooling team.
Some of my most fond memories of Phil were giving presentations with him on new technologies to our peers. We would present the pros and cons of adopting different technologies and even demoed our proof of concepts. Working with Phil to create a deck, practice our presentation, get team buy in, and successfully execute the adoption of said technologies defiantly helped push me to the next level in my career.
Phil successfully managed and help teach a team of developers new technologies including React, Redux, GraphQL, etc... He helped formulate weekly meetings in which the participants would learn new technologies. What Phil did here that was different, is that instead of having each participant listen to presentations, he had the participants rotate who was doing the presentation so in time... every participant ended up with the opportunity to teach the rest of the team.
One of Phil's strength is that is he cares so very much for his colleagues. I've had some interpersonal conflicts in the office and Phil has been consistent in listening to each side of a problem and help work through conflicts. He seeks to understand the motivations of each individual and assumes positive intent. I would 10/10 work for Phil again :).", and "I've worked with Phil at Symphony Commerce for slightly over two years. He reported directly to me as an engineering manager for the front-end / partner tooling team. Phil has made exceptional contributions to Symphony's long-term vision, product and team environment. As a manager, Phil has groomed his team to think beyond the task at hand and focus on the business / customer needs. His team members consistently develop and deliver outstanding, impactful products that other customers are eager to utilize. Examples range from a front-end template engine refactor, to a shop-the-look feature. Phil's engineers form one of the most motivated, innovative and purpose-driven teams at Symphony. Not only is Phil a great manager - he is also a great technical and professional mentor. Throughout 2016, he worked tirelessly to introduce engineering best practices and new tools to his team, successfully transitioning them from an onboarding-only group to a full-fledged feature development team. In addition, Phil has been instrumental in Symphony's expansion to build a network of Systems Integrators, providing key insights and strategic developer training to foster healthy partnerships. Most recently, Phil led the product vision for the partner tooling team and has done a phenomenal job in cementing Symphony's CMS and data ingestion strategy. Phil is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind hire. I am incredibly excited to see him grow his career further in a product-focused direction."
