My responsibilities have included the management and development of the finance teams, oversight of the day to day functions, delivery of the performance and financial data to the executive and board, providing guidance to senior management, developing financial strategy and business plans, producing policies, leading risk management, value for money, budgeting and treasury.I have led IT, HR, governance, procurement and facilities management. I am also a board member of a registered provider.I work collaboratively with the executive, senior management and across the business. I have carried out mergers and acquisitions, grown businesses, turned around failing businesses, worked with boards and executives to remove constraints, restructured teams and arranged funding. My key achievements include:- As a Finance Director I ensure the business has adequate cashflow being generated. In one entity, as interim FD, I achieved this by increasing their operating surplus from £2m to £5m. For a local authority owned company I arranged grant funding from government.- Increasing the development capacity at Network by changing the internal funding model and by setting up a formal group structure that enabled the use of underutilised group assets to support external funding. - On treasury I raised funding for four housing associations, the largest was at Network where we raised £400m through a group vehicle. At Aldwyck I restructured the derivative portfolio which provided £1m annual savings for three years.- For a small RP, specialising in mental health and learning difficulties, I have delivered a three-year value for money action plan, having obtained efficiency action plans from all directorates. I also provided the board with an understanding of their operating costs per unit. As a result of my work their governance rating was increased.- I have worked in commercial property development assessing prospective development schemes with the MD. I implemented systems for them and arranged funding. I have also turned around a loss-making logistics company, set up overseas warehousing for a manufacturer and relocated a business.- I work well with boards and committees. I have been commended by Boards on several occasions, for the work I have done with their business, and by the regulator twice.

  • Chs Group & Ccd Ltd
    Head Of Corporate Finance
Chs Group & Ccd Ltd Sep 2013 - Sep 2016
    Cambridge, United Kingdom
I joined the business to support the Group FD in developing the newly formed construction subsidiary, to develop the skills and processes of the finance function, lead on the development of treasury and manage business planning. The role also includes risk management, value for money, tax and procurement. My first year was predominantly spent in developing systems, processes and budget management for the new subsidiary. I reviewed the issues that was hindering the expansion of their development and isolated it to the housing association’s treasury portfolio. I negotiated two existing loans revising loan covenants which enabled development to be trebled. I recommended the group obtain larger sites that enabled outright sales to subsidise affordable units and for the group to move from social rent to the local housing allowance.Within the main group company, I have worked on developing the group’s financial performance; ensuring it links to the main corporate plan objectives, the revised monthly report highlights areas of under-performance which management respond on and who are then monitored. It includes a suite of KPI’s, trend analysis and forecast outturn. The pack also now includes balance sheet and cash-flow. In addition to finance I have taken over business planning for the group and I am responsible for submitting the HCA returns. I am also a member of the group’s investment panel where we assess prospective development schemes. Aside from advising on tax, funding and fit with our business plan I am also responsible for briefing members and the New Business and Development Committee on regulatory and legislative changes.
  • Aldwyck Housing Group
Treasury Manager & Interim Director Of Finance
Aldwyck Housing Group Jul 2011 - Feb 2013
    Luton
I joined Aldwyck as the Treasury Manager looking after a portfolio of around £500m. Contributing to the corporate objectives I generated £1.05m in annual interest savings from restructuring the derivative portfolio, resolved a number of funding constraints, organised new funding and developed relationships with six new lenders to the group.Following the departure of the FD in September 2011, I was asked by the Chief Executive to step up into the role on an interim basis. I revised the business plan, completed the budget, redesigned the management accounts, commenced reviews of systems and KPIs, negotiated an improvement in the Group’s TSA viability report, challenged the group to lift its profit; and recommended changes to group structure to improve tax efficiency. Through three initiatives I moved the group from £2m to £5m net profit. I presented the budget and business plan to the Board who unanimously accepted them. The regulator, who was also attending, commended the work that I had done in lifting the net surplus from £2m to £5m.My role took in overall responsibility for IT. Initial changes were to extend the coverage of the help desk and also to have them undertake half-day surgeries around the business. The information from the surgeries identified some poor interaction between systems and processes. An interim project manager was brought into to review the software scripts and an interim trainer provided training to ensure uniformity of approach to the housing system and also provided enhanced training for relevant staff. I brought in a consulting firm to review ICT and assess current systems and structure against industry norms. From the report’s recommendations we developed a business case assessment prioritising those which would aid direction of travel of the group’s medium term aims. This was the basis for the ICT strategy which was approved.
