Health, Safety & Environment Advisor

Humberside Fire And Rescue Service

Hull, East Riding Of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire & North East Linconshire

During my time within the Fire and Rescue Service I developed Policies and associated Procedural Guidance Notes that had a direct impact on the improved safety performance of the Service. I provided guidance and advice throughout the Service, from strategic to local safety concerns.Furthermore I compiled regular reports which are submitted to Corporate Management, Fire Authority and Governance and Scrutiny committees which identified safety performance, risk and opportunities.I was invited to be a keynote speaker at an Inside Government Conference within which I developed and delivered a presentation regarding the evolution of Health and Safety Practice within the Fire and Rescue Service, with a particular focus on behavioural safety and the potential benefits that this approach could yield in conjunction with improving safety culture and working with more traditional safety practices. The session was a great success and I received a great deal of interest from other Fire and Rescue Services nation-wide. I lead as the Services Accident/Incident Investigator and implemented formalised training to ensure that key individuals held the necessary qualification to provide effective investigations and subsequent findings that I could then interpret and further improve safety performance.I introduced a more efficient and suitable incident reporting solution into the Service which ultimately improved incident reporting, investigation and allowed me to provide more accurate data to the senior Management team. The solution streamlined the process and reduced unnecessary stages of investigation which were effecting the overall quality of investigation findings and improvements. I was lead auditor for the Fire and Rescue Service and during my time I was able to achieve the Service's first Health and Safety award (RoSPA Silver). The accolade was a great indication of the improving safety culture and performance across the Service.
