Transplant : I started with doing kidney and pancreas transplant, and started liver transplant in 2008Clinical research on Alemtuzumab with minimization of maintenance immunosuppression in high PRA kidney transplant recipientsTeaching: I did the "Surgeons as Educators" course of the American College of Surgeons, andserved on the national faculty at the "Surgical Education, Principles and Practice" course at the Annual conference of ACS. I was also a Faculty on the Teaching Cell at UTMB. I taught first year medical students Anatomy, as part of the "General Anatomy and Radiology" course; and I developed the curriculum for 3rd and 4th year students who rotated through Transplant. I was awarded the "Golden Scalpel" award for excellence in teaching.

I started as Assistant Prof in 1989, after publishing original work in surgery of Tropical pancreatitis from Koothattukulam, Kerala, and after working with LH Blumgart, University of Berne, Switzerland and with Paul McMaster, QE Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham. I set up the specialty of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at St John's. From 1993-1995 I trained in Transplant surgery, under Tom Starzl at University of Pittsburgh, and returned to St John's to set up the deceased donor transplant surgery in St Johns and in the city of Bangalore linking up 12 hospitals through an organ sharing network under an independent "Foundation for Organ Retrieval and Transplant Education (FORTE)". This was the first time deceased donor organ retrieval and organ sharing was done in India. There were several 'firsts' during this period at St John's: First liver resection(s), first series of Warren shunts for extra-hepatic portal vein obstructions, first deceased donor kidney transplant(s), first pediatric en bloc kidney transplant, first live donor liver transplant, first deceased donor liver transplant.
