The Helen Macpherson Smith Trust Analytical Laboratory is an ISO 9001 accredited facility which is part of Monash Platforms. It contains advanced instrumentation for chemical and physical analysis of pharmaceutical products and drugs in biological fluids. Equipment can be booked by internal and commercial clients on per day rates, or projects can be run by lab staff on a fee for service basis.

> Managed analytical development and validation activities for Biota's lead antiviral, Laninamavir. Successful pursuit of a single HPLC-MS method for the final 5 GMP steps greatly simplified validation and impurity tracking activities and led to significant cost savings.> Managed the successful and timely transfer of analytical methods for Biota's lead compounds to manufacturing facilities in the USA, Switzerland and Sweden.> Developed and implemented a policy document aligning analytical method expectations with the phase of clinical development (Phase 1, 2a, 2b-3). The policy was used to control costs by identifying non-essential analytical activities often quoted by contract research organizations.

> Developed and validated a UHPLC-ToF-MS method for characterization of Starpharma's lead drug, SPL7013. The method allowed the ~ 17kDa molecule to be analyzed against existing ICH/FDA guidelines for conventional, small molecule drugs. This significantly reduced the regulatory complexity in taking the drug forward.> Introduced voluntary job rotation amongst the analytical team. The team members responded positively to the increased learning and variety in their roles.
