I am now partly retired after 44 years of employment in the academic world.Over those years, I developed skills in digital electronics design and manufacture, operating system driver development, assembler level programming, desktop application design, web application development, computer network administration and Unix/Linux server administration.I have worked with Algol, Fortran77, C, C++, Java and many other languages that have come and gone as the wind has changed direction.My web development personal preferences at the moment are Linux server based using PHP/MySQL, and I am a lover of the MODx CMS. I have however been know to dabble with Java web applications on Google's App Engine.Since the mid 1980's, I have been a consultant software developer for Seetrax CAE Ltd. and I have developed a series of printed circuit board CAD applications for their product range.Development of those products is based on Microsoft Visual C++ and I use Perforce for software version control. My current work involves development of new facilities within the products to provide tighter integration with CAE tools and Xilinx FPGA design suites.

I was responsible for the main computing hardware and software technical innovation within my department. This also involved the installation, testing, configuration and maintenance of computer hardware and software in teaching and research laboratories.I also provided support in the areas of network services, network security, user account management and documentation.I worked on projects to achieve cross-platform and cross-campus integration of computing resources,and I was the primary developer of Web based solutions to various departmental management needs.
At the beginning of my technician role, I was responsible for the day to day running of an electronic measurements laboratory. This involved the preparation of test benches and verification of equipment operation and accuracy for student experiments.When computers began to play an increasing role in student teaching, I acquired skills in digital electronics design and Algol, Fortran and machine code programming. I used these skills to design various interface hardware to permit my department's digital computers to interact with various experiments.When the first microprocessor devices became available, I acquired skill in the 'C' programming language, and in conjunction with my digital electronics skill, I designed and constructed microprocessor based systems to help teach fundamental programming skills to students.In 1985, with the introduction of the first network capable computer workstations to my department, I was involved in planning the network topology of the installation, installing and configuring all necessary software, and the general day to day running of the facilities.
