Profile bio

About Philip Powell

I am a theoretical physicist with interests across a wide spectrum of phenomena exhibiting complex many-body and emergent behavior. My research interests include the description of dense nuclear matter, neutron star structure, atomic and nuclear superfluids, quantum simulation with ultra-cold atoms, and the properties of quantum gases in the presence of non-abelian gauge fields.I am also interested in computational and algorithmic aspects of today's most challenging physics problems and investigating how the tools of quantum field theory and large-scale supercomputing simulations can provide insight into our world.

Listed skills include Physics, Mathematica, Matlab, Research, and 10 others.

Postdoctoral Research Physicist

Livermore, Ca

I worked with the Lattice QCD group at LLNL, applying world-class computational algorithms and resources to probe the properties of the strong nuclear force, which is responsible for the fundamental structure of atomic nuclei. This work combined massively parallel algorithms designed to achieve scalable computational speedup on world-class computers with advanced techniques in quantum field theory and fundamental physics. My work involved computing the properties of nuclear matter (e.g., protons, neutrons, pions) from first principles, using the theory of QCD. In addition, I was part of the HotQCD collaboration, investigating the thermodynamic properties of high-temperature nuclear matter and the location of the proposed phase transition from low-temperature nuclear matter to a deconfined quark-gluon plasma.I also worked to develop models for quantum simulation of gauge theories at finite density and temperature using ultra-cold atomic gases. This work offered the possibility of "special purpose" quantum computers designed to solve high-impact problems of scientific importance, while serving as a complementary approach to conventional gate-qubit based models of quantum computation.

I am a licensed soccer referee with the following associations:National Intercollegiate Soccer Referee's Association (NISOA/NCAA), 2008--PresentUnited States Soccer Federation (USSF; grade 7), 1995--PresentIllinois High School Association (IHSA; recognized status). 2007--2014I have officiated over 600 matches since 2008, including more than 120 collegiate. and 140 high school matches.

Dec 1995 - Present

Adjunct Professor Of Physics

Fremont, Ca

I taught calculus-based introductory courses in mechanics and electricity & magnetism to students pursuing a variety of degrees in math, science and engineering. I developed both lecture and laboratory instructional material, established course guidelines and implemented student learning objectives and evaluation metrics. I also coordinated with fellow faculty to ensure continuity of course instruction and student experience.

Aug 2015 - May 2018

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Area

I studied the properties of dense quark matter and its implications for the QCD phase diagram and neutron star stability using the tools of finite-temperature quantum field theory. In particular, I investigated the possibility of stabilizing massive neutron stars otherwise prone to collapse through the introduction of repulsive quark interactions, while accounting for the effects of chiral symmetry breaking and the formation of superfluid (color superconducting) diquark condensates. This work provides a possible explanation for the recent observation of neutron stars of greater than two solar masses, the possibility of whose existence was previously discounted due to supposed gravitational instabilities.I also studied the effects of artificial gauge fields and spin-orbit coupling on ultra-cold atomic gases, constructing the phase diagrams of systems capable of emulating otherwise inaccessible quantum systems. I focused especially on the laboratory realization of non-Abelian Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling, known previously from condensed matter studies, but now possible in atomic systems subject to unprecedented experimental control.
