Prof Phillip McIntyre is an Australian academic who researches how new things are created by human beings. He seeks to answer a basic question: what is the most rational way to explain how novel things are bought into being? He also seeks to answer an applied research question: How can these explanations increase humanities ability to generate new and useful things? His book, 'Creativity and Cultural Production: Issues for Media Practice' was published by Palgrave MacMillan in 2012. He holds an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant researching 'Creativity and Cultural Production in the Hunter: An Applied Ethnographic Study of New Entrepreneurial Systems in the Creative Industries'. Dr McIntyre was the Head of Discipline for Communication and Media in the School of Design, Communication and Information Technology at the University of Newcastle in Australia. He was a visiting scholar at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK in 2010 working with a research group in sound production in the Faculty of Information and Technology. He is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association and a member of the Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production. He sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Art of Record Production and was involved in the music industry as a songwriter, instrumentalist, musical director and manager dealing with promoters, record companies and distribution labels. He has worked in music retail and as a music journalist. The videos he produced, directed and edited were broadcast on ABCTV and he produces and engineers recordings for local artists. He taught in the the Music Industry Training Package at WEA and the Music Industry Skills course at TAFE, which included members of Silverchair in the songwriting course he taught. His most recent media production was a documentary series on the wine industry for ABC Radio.
